Feds want unis: "reexamining admissions practices, hiring more conservative faculty, cracking down on student protests, combating grade inflation, reducing foreign donations and lowering tuition." Some faculty will fall for this nonsense. The bigger worry is that boards and presidents will.

I am glad AAUP endorsed Abdul Sayed. And I will never ever understand how some of my colleagues, Professors, continue to insist that education, the pursuit of KNOWLEDGE, is apolitical as cops are called to our campuses and hedge funds run our schools. Silence has not, will not ever, protect you.

The vilification of Fauci rly make my blood boil. COVID was an incredibly challenging time for everyone (once in a century pandemics do that, who would’ve thought!). He and many other civil servants were acting in good faith off imperfect info. The same standard is not applied to others!

INBOX: the last dedicated science reporter at The Wall Street Journal, @aylinwoodward.bsky.social, has left the newsroom. This came after the Murdoch-owned newspaper dissolved its Health and Science Bureau last October. NPR, CBS, and WaPo also gutted their climate desks in the last eight months.

After nearly five incredible years, The Journal's last remaining dedicated science reporter (that's me!) has left WSJ. Following the dissolution of the miraculous Health & Science Bureau last October, myself and a small numbers of others worked hard to continue our former team's legacy, but the time has finally come for me to move on. I am deeply grateful for all of the opportunities this publication -- and the journalist community I met there -- has given me. From stories about T. rex lips to primate booze problems to shrinking brains, to Nobel Prize and NASA mission coverage, Jane Goodall's obituary, winter storm, volcano and wildfire smoke stories, I left no scientific stone unturned, working constantly to inspire curiosity and wonder in Journal readers during times of increasing turmoil and challenge. I met some of my closest friends, wrote for two of the most phenomenal editors I'll ever have the privilege of working with, saw Evan come home, and learned (in retrospect, naturally) the gift it is to be on a team of professional nerds who drive the cutting edge of health and science journalism in America while uplifting each other and their craft. Well, this is your counterprogramming kid signing off. Not sure where I'll end up next, but don't be strangers y'all. In the meantime, I'll be coaching roller derby across the U.S., South America and Europe!

I’m interested in any political imagination for accountability. It has to be proactive & retroactive. It has to be spectacular. And, ideally, it would leave so many of them broke that it actually becomes a deterrent. Being poor is truly all they care about not because they don’t care about prison.

What a great article not only on faculty workloads, but how little our salaries actually factor in to most university budgets. A few highlights. First, our salaries are falling:

Third, faculty salaries are falling even if we statistically control for faculty rank and institution. By our analysis of National Center for Education Statistics data, tenured and tenure-track salaries are down 10 percent in real terms since 2016 and are lower today than they were in 2002; nontenured faculty salaries are down 4 percent since 2016 and are at 2002 levels today. To put this plainly: Suppose sharply increased teaching loads enabled institutions to cut one out of every seven full-time faculty. (That’s roughly what we saw last year in severe cuts announced at West Virginia, Western Illinois, and St. Cloud State Universities.) The associated savings in salary and benefits even through such drastic action would amount to less than 2.5 percent of total institutional expenditures for the typical university. The upshot? If you think higher education has a cost problem, squeezing more teaching out of faculty is not the first place you should look.
