I don’t think I’ve ever met Mari (a pseudonym), but her story is so deeply familiar to me and the things I’ve witnessed here in the States. Homelessness triggering Long Covid ME, triggering continued homelessness. Caregiver abuse that goes unrecognized as DV. Complete absence of social services.

Today @thesicktimes.org: Without help from government institutions, people like Mari, a young Black woman living in Canada with severe ME, are supported primarily by fellow people with severe symptoms. thesicktimes.org/2026/07/20/a...

'“I didn’t have anyone close to me who cared enough to help me when I wasn’t being happy & friendly,” Mari said. This is common among people who develop severe ME, who often experience widespread abandonment as their condition worsens.' Help Mari escape caregiver abuse: www.gofundme.com/f/marigfm

✨ Anti-carceral care is not doing nothing ✨ Too often people assume that “anti-carceral care” means ignoring someone’s crisis, or abandoning them without support. That’s not it.

You're not a failure if you can't hack the academy. It's ableist. You might not be cut out for it because it's designed to kill folks with your disabilities. It tried to kill me when I had a manic breakdown. You didn't fail if you can't fit its awful constrictions & codes, you just can't conform.

A proposed bill in California (backed by Democrats) would grant the state even more power to lock mad, mentally ill, and disabled folks up in psych facilities & forcibly give them psychotropic medications against their will. www.kqed.org/news/1206941... #psychabolition #disability #abolition

‼️ URGENT‼️ request for community support! A Black, Disabled Comrade in NYC is facing an immediate threat of homelessness. $1200 is needed TODAY to secure their housing and give them room to breathe. Venmo & Cashapp: strawb3rrym00n Use the purple heart emoji (💜) on the note. Please share & donate!!

Flyer with text overlaid on a notebook page. Up top highlighted "URGENT" with "request for community support!" Underneath, black text: "A Black, Disabled Comrade in NYC is facing an immediate threat of homelessness. The constant stress of housing instability is taking a heavy toll on top of autistic burnout, survivorhood, and deep grief. They are doing everything they can to build a stable, self-determined life, but no one can do it alone. Let's wrap them in community care." Highlighted in yellow: "$1200 is needed TODAY to secure their housing and give them room to breathe." On the bottom right: "Venmo & Cashapp: strawb3rrym00n Use the purple heart emoji (💜) on the note."

Building alternatives to 911 must be rooted in prison abolition, anti-capitalism, & radical autonomy, esp for BIPOC communities. Otherwise, you're reproducing the same coercive, paternalistic, anti-Black, ableist systems under the guise of "community care," and gaining some capital along the way.

"As we saw with the death of Jordan Neely, racism and ableism — that is, discrimination based on disability — against those we perceive as visibly mentally ill can even result in politicians and media outlets celebrating your death at the hands of a vigilante." !!!

Lil Nas X faces felony charges of "battery" against an officer from an arrest during a mental health crisis in late August. I wrote about my family member's experience with police being sent during mental health episodes—still common for wellness checks—and how it ruined their life. @teenvogue.com
