William C.@williamcson.bsky.social · 6mo agoAdditional context: A former president who shaped the current deportation machine and signed IIRAIRA, and another former president who first employed Trump's White House Border Czar and emboldened ICE, deporting more than every president before him combined, are telling you to “stand up” to ICE.
This is Minneapolis: A neighbor sold some silver jewelry she inherited from her grandparents to cover rent for a neighbor who hasn't been able to work during these 7 weeks of federal occupation and is at risk of eviction. We need an eviction moratorium NOW. And resources for food delivery.
There’s a lot being said about ICE paralleling fugitive slave patrols. As a historian of slavery, I think it’s far more complicated than most are articulating. A lot of historical context and power dynamics are being mashed up in the process.
In October, ICE grabbed Maher Tarabishi. He was a 24/7 caregiver for his disabled son Wael. At the time of Maher’s detention, disability advocates warned that taking away Wael’s caregiver put his life at risk. Wael died on Friday at age 30. ICE caused his death. They didn’t get to say goodbye.

Another question I came here with was: how effective are the whistles and honking? Does it stop abductions? And the answer is, surprisingly to my cynical self, yes, and often. I have talked to so many people who have successfully interrupted kidnappings.

I just got off the phone with my stepdaughter who manages a chain restaurant in MPLS suburbs. She has employees on leave scared to come to work, others arriving in tears, terrified, managers giving employees rides to/from work, running scenarios in her mind of how to respond if ICE raids them 1/

They are shutting down economic and civic activity. They are conducting "papers please" stops. They are criminalizing being a bystander/witness. You could be next.
This country is in such a terrible place. Antisemitism is an important & interlocking part of all the -isms that are consuming us. We have to reckon with it & the ugliness of our past to be able to move towards a future with any hope. This community & all communities deserve safety.
