I love languages and am bad at capitalism. Focusing on Japanese and French and finally putting some time into Korean. Mandarin is on the back burner for now. You can also find me in the fediverse @raen@friendsofdesoto.social 🖖

NatGeo Wildlife photographer Martin Greguš Jr. captured this polar bear getting comfy somewhere in northern Canada. Scritches for their itches. The closer we get to the midterm election, the more I need *this* kind of Big Bear Energy. (📷: Martin Greguš Jr., mywildlive on IG)

Elysia crispata are also called "lettuce sea slugs". They utilize 'kleptoplasty', stealing chloroplasts from macroalgae. But the name 'crispata' means "frilled", referring to how it looks like a 1970's tuxedo shirt. Here the fun bit: it's an animal that evolved LEAVES. Let's talk about it!

From a sea slug forum, an Elysia crispata showing purple and orange fringed animal with dark black and white spots on the body. it's on a bit of coral with some algae lawn beneath it.

Since the fire department is sooooo concerned about clearance for their massive vehicles, how about we take away their massive trucks and replace them with the tinier ones used in Japan, and other sensible countries, presumably. Then they won’t have a reason to block traffic calming. 😡

I wrote 4 "cats & more" books featuring The Bear. It was how readers got to know him, & one of them became a top 10 bestseller. But the best thing I ever wrote about him was not in a cat-themed book; it was in Ring The Hill (2019) You can read it here for free: tomcox.substack.com/p/the-lion-t...

If I’m going to speak in depth about the Magic House, I should probably begin at the railway station.
