I have resigned from the Greenhouse Gas Protocol's Independent Standards Board. The Protocol is openly violating its own rules and has effectively delegated forest carbon accounting standards to a secret, industry-led working group. ghgpolicy.org/s/2026-06-08...
"Something remarkable happened in April. For the first time in history, wind and solar generated more electricity than gas across the entire planet. Not in a country. Not in a region. Globally." Tons of great news here from Danny Kennedy (via @billmckibben.bsky.social's newsletter, which rules).

This -- autonomous vehicles leading to vastly more congestion, more total vehicle miles driven -- is very predictable, and frequently predicted. Far as I can tell, none of the enthusiasts, in industry or in the cities opting for this stuff, gives a shit. It's maddening.
New research examines Waymo's California robotaxi trips btw Aug 2023 and Dec 2025. Conclusion: 46% of miles driven involved no one inside the car. That's 40 million miles of deadheading, with Waymo vehicles using road space w/o transporting a human. doi.org/10.32866/001...

Sharing a fascinating graph of fuel use by the global cement industry, made by my colleague, Christy Stanker. We often think of the cement industry as running on coal. After all, the only coal-burning facilities left in California are cement kilns. But the truth is more complex and interesting.

#EnergySky Any recommended introductory resources on electricity prices for masters students? Bright but untrained, so I need to explain the major components of the system (E/T&D/&c), financial costs, cost allocation, bonus for some int'l comparison. The basics of why power costs what it costs.
Our latest Corporate Climate Assessment of @nippon-steel.bsky.social reveals its recent global expansion has not been matched by responsible climate action.

Kind of feel like we especially don’t need fancy law explainers at the moment. “Can the president just take money when he wants?” A third grader could answer this. A Yale law prof is likelier to write the wrong answer so their 2L can work for Alito
California gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra just took half a million dollars from the fossil fuel industry. This on top of the max contribution from Chevron. When someone shows you who they are, believe them.
You can get to a high-warming world without high emissions . That's the part of this week's "RCP 8.5 is implausible" discussion that's getting missed. A short thread on why the relief is premature 🧵

This really is quite something. In the 15 years @carbonbrief.org have tracked UK media, 2025 was first ever year where more newspaper editorials opposed #climate action than supported it. Meanwhile, the *actual* climate crisis deepens by the month. Go figure.
If electricity prices went up 76% to subsidize the solar industry, people would completely lose their shit. But doing it to subsidize the Slop Industry is apparently kosher.

Great thread from @rebeccawdell.bsky.social on what is actually happening with oil and gas. Yes, the #StraitofHormuz closure cut off a lot of exports; but those have been partially compensated by drawing down reserves. That can't last much longer.

Great thread. One amongst several upshots is within a few weeks to a month China’s willingness to deploy its strategic oil reserve or save it for later, with all that implies for its net imports and global oil prices, will be the global oil price maker on a scale of $10s to a $100+/barrel.
