Das auf ein Jahr, an dessen Ende ein El Niño-Ereignis liegt, folgende Kalenderjahr weist in der Regel eine globale Durchschnittstemperatur auf, die deutlich über dem mehrjährigen Durchschnitt liegt und häufig neue Temperaturrekorde aufstellt. Auch wenn 2026 extrem erscheint, so wird 2027 extremer.

Der El Niño-Höhepunkt wird (daher der Name) erst gegen Weihnachten erwartet, aber die Vorhersagen stimmen darin überein, dass mit Temperaturabweichungen des Oberflächenwasser des Pazifiks (Nino 3.4 Region) über 4 °C zu rechnen sein wird. Das wäre weit mehr als das bisher stärkste Ereignis (3.1 °C).
