Former runner, former paramedic, former biochemist, former Director of Communications, former instructor, former young person. Still he/him/nerd. Working on a hard but fun SF novel about the science involved in the search for life.

Life may have had a bizarre start, with bits & pieces strewn on metal surfaces on the Earth's sea floor near or on smokers. A big evolutionary step might have been getting assembled & free of the need for metal surfaces. Speculation: What if ALH 84001 fossils were big enough for part of life? 🧪🧬

🧪🧬 About 45 years ago, I signed up for a graduate class I didn't have the prerequisites for. Quite possibly only the professors teaching it did. I couldn't drop out after the first class because it was so fascinating. We were studying how pores in membranes worked. I probably should have.

@clbergpowers.bsky.social It was Washington University in St. Louis. I don't want cause problems for anyone. Rich, powerful, a lot from New York, known for Pre-Med. A number of profs were Jewish, many in the sciences worked on the Manhattan project. Tests were scheduled around Jewish observances.

If you don’t think some asshole softball dad will humiliate a cisgender girl for hitting an oppo bomb off their daughter by challenging their gender you have never met a youth sports parent in your life.

Two weeks ago we visited an Andean condor rescue and captive breeding program in Zuleta, Ecuador. Reminded us of the California condor captive breeding program that revived the population from 27 to over 600 over several decades. Can populations thrive after such severe genetic pinholing? TBD

Dottie Number We were one of the first high school chemistry classes to have multi-function calculators. (Yes, we learned to use slide rules.) We had a guessing game: someone would pick a number and someone else would pick a function. We'd guess the answer and then check to see the result. 1/n

Someone asked if the Science Feed was only for people in the natural sciences. Is there a feed for someone in the unnatural sciences? I think I'm joking but I'd at least check the feed out if there is one for the unnatural sciences. Wondering what constitutes unnatural sciences.

Per my calculation, I have to sell about 1100 shirts to fund our insect mural series. Which sounds nuts, ok? I know. That sounds nuts. However... We already sold 132 so... I dunno, maybe we CAN make good things happen with silliness joy and art? I kinda think we can.

Welcome to Shrimp City! Teach your friends about a variety of crustaceans with this helpful visual aid - and set the record straight... bugs is shrimp. Shrimp is not bugs These shirts are designed by @the666cat.bsky.social & printed in Philly! Get one at SquidFacts.net (pls RT!)

A cream colored shirt with a red and blue design featuring 9 crustaceans and a fly. A scuba diving Fly Says a”am I shrimp too?” A pistol shrimp wearing a cowboy hat says “bang bang” a mantis shrimp says KO, the title says a”shrimp city and friends” a hermit crab uses a skull
As a shell, a jumbo shrimp is labeled himbo shrimp, and a yeti crab is labeled “snack bacteria cafe”. The fly has an asterisk next to
Him and underneath the whole design it says *the latest research shows that bugs is actually shrimp”

@astrohelena.bsky.social A friend saw your presentation at Allegheny Observatory last night. You went way beyond his training and he was very impressed I hope to see you here among the astronomers. I used this book for Earthbound things, but the number of citations in astrophysics are amazing!

A very worn copy of Bird, Stewart and Lightfoot's (BSL) red Transport Phenomena book.

I learned this for Earthbound chemical engineering.

It shocks me how many times BSL shows up in astrophysics papers and the like. We joked about relativistic fluid flow.

It's apparently not a joke. If you study the book, you'll figure out how to adapt it for Special Relativity. I would have no hope of adapting it for General Relativity.

@dykanite.bsky.social I went to a gem show with my wife. I loved rocks as a kid, but the science was all about digging the stones up, not chemistry and geology. I had no idea there were so many different gems and rocks. I asked one of the workers if a book they had went into the chemistry

Repost with your first crush. Joan of Arc Just a teenager, in a world where women meant little. Horrified at what the war had done to the common people. Chosen by God to do what the men around her would not and could not do. Brilliant strategist. Held an English soldier and cried while he died.

There are things adults & parents say to people with (Au & A)DHD that they think will encourage us but are traumatizing. There are things nurses & doctors say to people with diabetes that they think will encourage us but are traumatizing. Um, anyone notice an overlap? #adhd #audhd #diabetes #T2D

@astronomy.bsky.social Strange question: What is the farthest anyone has been from the sun? I used to have an astronomy program that gave distances from the sun. Assuming the orbital height, I went through the Apollo missions and found the record. I forget the answer. Is Artemis 2 the new record?

"It's ok if I post disinformation because it could be true" "It's ok if I misrepresent a thing as happening now even if the article is 5 yo, because it's probably worse now" It's ok if I mislead people, because I'm on YOUR side. Rings a bell? Unfollow and block them. Poison to your community.

It really pays to remind ourselves frequently that this whole immigration "crisis" is made up out of whole cloth. There was no emergency, danger or problem, only a demagogue stirring up racist grievances for political advantage.

As Fran was nice enough to highlight this, I thought I'd put up a brief thread. 3 in 10 proteins that our cells make are either embedded in membranes (ion channels, adhesion molecules, etc.) or secreted (insulin, antibodies). They move through the secretory pathway. 1/

simple diagram of the secretory pathway.

Exciting preprint from the @merz.bsky.social lab proposing how fidelity of membrane fusion is achieved #membranes #trafficking

I’m back after a 3 day suspension for sharing a link to publicly available police reports exposing Blood Tribe nazis. They also removed the post. Bluesky evidently prioritizes the protection of literal, active nazis over community safety. Unfortunately for BT, they’re already in the sunlight now :)
