It ought never to be forgotten that it’s deeply deeply weird for 21st century American public policy questions to revolve around interpretations of the history of 13th century England.

Interesting to read this paper showing how the medieval English Jews are still relevant in legal debates today. Though, Julie Mells' work argues that Jews weren't exempt from the Common Law, nor were they royal villeins, that was a later invention.
So, yesterday I talked about the first known Black voter in a parliamentary election in Great Britain and, before that, the experience of the Welsh. Today, let's talk about English Jews and what we might learn from their history and birthright citizenship in my paper. Let's go back to the 1290s...

A recent book on Muslim Europe repeats this claim that Jews invited or helped plan the invasion of Spain in 711, despite it long-since being discounted by historians (also weirdly puts 'invasion' in scare quotes). Disappointing to hear this stuff promoted uncritically.
My favorite part of the @askhistorians.bsky.social subreddit is learning a new& fun Conspiracy Jews Have Been Accused Of By Christians That Has Been Accepted As Fact Despite No Evidence (Jews did not, in fact, secretly help the Moors conquer Spain with our sneaky intelligence leaks)
Pleased to contribute to this episode, talking about Montfort's treatment of England's Jews.
