My daughter lost her first tooth and put it under her pillow. I replaced it with an even bigger tooth. She wants to play tooth games? Let's dance.

Tough one. In terms of weaponry, probably Howard Pope, not that he has to use his firearm much these days. But his ability to incisively pick apart someone and find their emotional weak spots is probably more devastating anyway. #AwesomeCharacters

#LitHodgepodge I think Jenny Lewis would be the ultimate choice to assemble a song for my tale of Henry Clarkson. I think the vibe matches, and she has an incredible ability to make you feel nostalgic and wistful about things you’ve never even experienced.

FRIDAY FLIGHTS OF FANCY

[Graphic of a winged angel holding a book]

Prompt:
9 | Your book is getting the adaptation treatment, and [INSERT FAMOUS MUSICIAN HERE] wants to score/write a song for it! Who is your dream collaborator?

[Graphic of a talking crow]
If you thought I would say Sheryl Crow, please go sit in the corner. If you thought I would say Counting Crows, please exit the room. I shall have John Quilliams, or I shall have no one at all.

Join tomorrow for Saturday Snap Judgments!

As a matter of fact, just earlier today I decided to add a significant piece of jewelry to Tara’s ensemble, an hourglass charm on her bracelet. Henry only ever thought of it as one of many little trinkets she owned, but then he spotted the same thing out in the wild, years later. #AwesomeCharacters

The money pit restaurant I would open as a billionaire would be the opposite of farm to table. What are the most unnatural flavors possible? Hiring top food scientists, giving a blank check and telling them to really explore the dark corners of the flavor latent space. I want to taste eternity.

#LitHodgepodge This is very easy for Henry. He would want to travel to the past to find out what actually happened to his beloved Tara the night she went missing, and to try to prevent it if he could.

THURSDAY THRIFTED THERAPY

[Graphic of an old-timey bearded man sitting and leaning his arm against a barrel with a tiny frog crawling up its side]

Prompt:
8 | Answer one (or more) of these “would you rather” questions as your character:
🪦 Would you rather know when or how you’re going to die?
🧠 Would you rather have a perfect memory or be able to forget anything you wanted at will?
⏳ Would you rather time travel to the past or future?
💔 Would you rather never be able to show emotions or never be able to hide them?

[Graphic of talking crow]
“Would you rather” is a classic icebreaker which I doubt requires explanation. Surely you’ve been asked at some point whether you would rather fight 100 duck-sized elephants or one elephant-sized duck? If you chose the latter, you are clearly unacquainted with very many ducks.

Join tomorrow for Friday Flights of Fancy!

Henry is a restaurant manager, but he actually knows the food, not just the business side. There are “hidden gems” all around, and smaller kitchens make the best food because they care about the craft more than turning tables. It matters more than pretentious eyewash. #AwesomeCharacters

Tell me about your #AwesomeCharacters Your character is in the modern world, money is no object. Where are they going to eat? 1) Michelin star restaurant 2) Casual dining place 3) Little known but amazing hole in the wall 4) Sidewalk hot dog cart #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

#LitHodgepodge A small bit from an untitled work in progress. This is a bit lavish compared to what I often produce, and I’ve got some sections that are maybe a little more fun and representative, but they are in huge files that are hard to navigate on my crappy phone!

#LitHodgepodge 7 Narrative voice is the unique fingerprint of your storytelling. Sentence structure, diction & tone all play a part. Share a snip where we can hear the sound of your narrative voice! NOTE: Choose a snip focused on narration (not dialogue). #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

WEDNESDAY WORDSMITHS

[Graphic of a woman with a thoughtful expression, holding a quill, with paper on her desk in front of her and small cherub and demon figures at either side]

Prompt:
7 | Post and discuss a snip where the narrative voice shines in your WIP.

[Graphic of a talking crow]
Narrative voice is the unique flavor of your storytelling. Sentence structure, word choice, tone, and POV all add up to a distinctive perspective that is woven through the narration. Think of it as your story’s personality.

Roxie famously has outright dismissed the very notion of plans. She simply acts and reacts according to whims or whatever strikes her in a given moment. Pepper has a plan always, but nobody would understand it. God had a plan once, but…well, you see how that has worked out. #AwesomeCharacters

💀🫜 Charlie (Chelizabeth) Delta 🦊👻@charliedeltawrites.bsky.social · 4d ago

Tell me about your #AwesomeCharacters Does your character have a plan? Are they the type to have a multistage plan worked out in advance? Do they prefer to wing it? Or are they purely reacting to circumstances? Does their plan need to adjust over time? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

#LitHodgepodge I’ve not once set out to create an archetypical character. But I can recognize them where they exist. A sort that I’ve happened upon several times is the Everyman. Eric, Bill, Wyatt, certainly Henry. They often encounter extraordinary circumstances as a counterpoint to their norms.

Pamela Jeong 🎃🫜@pamelajeong.bsky.social · 5d ago

#LitHodgepodge 6 Tropes and the archetypes they're built around help us understand reader expectations. If you know what’s expected, you can lean into that familiarity, or subvert it. Identify a character archetype in your WIP. Who are they? How do you use them? #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

TUESDAY TROPES

[Graphic of an old man wanderer, with a sack on his back and a long walking stick, and a black cat]

Prompt:
6 | Tell us about an archetypal character in your WIP. Who are they, and what is their role in the story? How do you utilize, and possibly subvert, expected patterns? Feel free to share a snip.

[Graphic of a talking crow]
Archetypes are like character blueprints that represent something universal about the human experience. Examples include the rebellious hero, the benevolent ruler, the mentor, the wanderer, the reluctant warrior, the trickster, and the reclusive genius.

#LitHodgepodge For Roxie, happiness is existing in the moment, as many moments as possible. There is no plan. Five minutes ago is a distant memory. Roxie thrives on an unexpected debate with an advertisement, a wild chase thru town with a new friend, or eating orgasmic tacos in the park.

Pamela Jeong 🎃🫜@pamelajeong.bsky.social · 6d ago

#LitHodgepodge 5 A person's vision of happiness tells us a lot about them. Do they imagine adventure, security, peace? Or is it in the details—a cozy hearth, trophy on the mantle, gaggle of grandbabies? What's your OC's version of happiness? Give us a snapshot. #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

MONDAYS WITH MARCEL

[Black & white picture of Marcel Proust, a man of the fin de siècle who had dark hair, sleepy eyes, and a dark mustache, sitting with his elbow propped on the back of his chair and looking pensive]

Prompt:
5 | Answer as one or each of your characters (as well as yourself, if you wish!):
What is your idea of perfect happiness?

[Graphic of a talking crow]
The Proust Questionnaire is a set of questions popularized by French writer Marcel Proust. Victorians answered these questions in parlor games, and modern interviewers now often use them. They can also be a great character development tool!

#Lithodgepodge I’m really only around the fringes here and don’t know anybody’s work well enough to ask specifically. So just in general for anybody who sees this: do you hope to reflect on something of the real world in your writing, or do you want total escapism?

[Graphic of a Victorian woman reading a book]

Prompt:
4 | Have you admired another writer’s technique and wondered how they do it? Shout them out and ask away! Or ask the community at large a general question about craft, or a specific question to help you workshop an issue in your WIP.

[Graphic of a talking crow]
