That won’t change.” “It wouldn’t upset me if it did.” I replied. “Me neither, but that isn’t the world we live in, is it?” “Someday, perhaps.” “I wouldn’t count on it in your lifetime.” He shook his head. We sat in silence for a moment before I turned to him. “You know, I never asked you: how do you cope?” “What?” “Earlier, you said I needed a healthier coping mechanism. So, what’s yours? How do you handle the burdens of command?” He drained his drink and placed the empty glass on the crate before regarding me gravely. “I keep a garden.” “Seriously?” “Why not? It is very relaxing, and I like nurturing new life. Feels like it balances things out, in a way. I’ll have to invite you over to see it, sometime. My roses came in very nicely this year.” “I’d like that.” I shook my head; you think you know a guy. “Now,” he rose from the crate, “I think I am going to go pass out for a while. #WIPSnips Sep 1 - garden Tough to choose from because “garden” is mentioned 328 times! I’m sure this will get cut down in editing. I decided to go with the opening paragraph of the story! 🏡🌼🥕🐇🦋🐦🐝

The cottage garden was doing perfectly well, thank you very much! The flowers still bloomed on time every spring. The root vegetables still fed the rabbits. The butterflies and birds still had their fill of nectar. Everything was fine. Chicory just needed a little nap was all. And he’d have that nap if the foolish wasps would stop buzzing in his ears.

6/24/20 Someone was living in the attic. It wasn’t as much an attic as a crawl-space. Not even that, more of a space over the rafters that wasn’t visible from the floor. Well, mostly not visible, but you could sort of see through the floorboards, which weren’t even really floorboards because it wasn’t a floor or a ceiling, just kinda some shelving haphazardly resting on the crossbeams upon which he stowed supplies. The cabin was small and cozy and held everything in it that Johann needed. He had a little stove for warmth, a little basin for washing, a lot of ammo and his rifle, a little garden out back to supplement his diet when the supplies from town and the fish from the lake didn’t satisfy. And someone in the attic.

But as those same years passed and Askaly’s awareness grew, she discovered a terrible fear rooted in her mother’s heart. Sometimes, she would wake up screaming and wheezing, and for days, she would not sleep again, not until she could no longer push her exhaustion away. During the month of Neʋoly, a beam of light would hang over her, and no matter how much she hid in the dark, it would not leave. Her normally confident mother would make herself small in posture and voice, wouldn’t speak when spoken to, would miss important appointments. Her face betrayed anguish; a pain that Askaly could find no medicine for. It took her years to learn, through a bitter remark from Agaeilisa, that her husband and Nitara’s father had been killed during the Bloody Year. After that, Askaly invited her mother to visit the Memorial Garden erected to honour all those who had fallen during that period, both to the plague and to the genocide. It took effort to convince her mother, but at last, she agreed. That first visit had been the hardest. Askaly knew that it had been a horrible time that still haunted nensii memory, both of those who had survived and those who inherited them, but it wasn’t openly spoken about, it wasn’t taught, and until that day, Askaly had had no idea of the harrowing scale.

“Thank goodness.” He breathed a sigh of relief. Touching Avery’s cheek, he blinked a few times before getting up. “Just hold on a little longer, okay? You’ll be back home soon.” *No.* Avery couldn’t stand it. He was too late, and he *hated* that. More tears rolled down his cheeks, just as Tristan turned to leave him alone. This couldn’t be it. He didn’t *want* it to be over. He hopped right out of the truck and grabbed hold of the back of Tristan’s shirt. Startled, Tristan quickly turned. “Avery, what are you doing?” “I want a garden.” “What?” Baffled, he took Avery’s arms. “I want a garden,” Avery repeated with a whimper. “I want to make things grow. I love flowers. I wouldn’t be allowed to have one back home.” Tristan sighed, but his grip was soon gentle. “Avery…” “I want to go on more car rides. I want music. *Your* music. I want to sit with you by the beach. I want to wear your jackets when it gets cold.” Avery choked on his next breath. “I don’t want to sleep alone anymore. I want to fall asleep without worrying about nightmares. I get so *scared,* Tristan, worrying about what not to do or who not to see. There are so many things I *can’t* do back home! I can’t stand it. I just want to be a good person.”

“…and good lord, the flowers! I’ve never seen so many different kinds of lilies in my life, I swear. And the poppies! Never in my life have I seen poppies like these! Have you seen them? The color is just so delicate. I mean, I know ‘delicate’ describes constitution more than color, but you get my drift, don’t you? I mean, how many workers do you think they employ, just for the gardening, do you figure?” Daria squinted thoughtfully. “At least, what, a dozen, don’t you figure?” Melody blinked at her—then realized that Daria had more than just stopped for breath and was actually awaiting her response. “At least,” she replied, smiling blandly and shuffling her feet. She needed out. She no longer cared about devising an appropriate transition; it would simply have to be a hard cut instead of a fade. She could not carry on about the requisite workforce for the resort’s botanical upkeep any longer with this woman wearing a tank top that read SPIRITUAL GANGSTER, whose average words-per-minute had to rival even the most competent of court stenographers. “Excuse me, I’m just gonna…” Melody lifted her glass to indicate she needed a top-off and began making her way back to the bar. To her horror, Daria followed. “I can’t imagine, I mean, I just can’t imagine all the work it takes. Have you been over to the big pool yet? Well, no wonder you can’t appreciate the topic fully, because my word. It is breathtaking. There’s a little garden island in the middle of the pool! It’s pristine, I tell you, just pristine. And on the end of the pool closest to the main building, they’ve got these trees—oh, gosh, what were they called again? I just asked one of the workers on my way over here, and now I’ve completely forgotten…” That’s it, Melody decided. No matter what, she could not get a second drink. Even if she stayed she couldn’t get a second drink, because this conversation was surely going to kill her before she could.

This was the most varied picnic she had ever prepared for them. Learning what Nitara’s organism could and could not tolerate and experimenting with recipes and ingredients had been a long and not always delectable journey, but one that repaid her now that she watched her wife enjoying this regale, supplied with dishes and combinations she had never tasted before, without worrying that she might eat something that would cause her harm. “We really should do this more often. Not only this, but all of it. All these small and wonderful things that bring us together.” “Indeed.” Ashrah snuggled up to her wife, a presence that had come to represent a source of comfort and fortitude and joy she had once believed herself incapable of attaining.
