The Platner story shows how political consultants should not parachute into a state and pick a candidate. There were a bunch of solid Democratic candidates in the state. Maybe the elites don’t know better than the people who actually live in the state?

This is exciting! It’s a very useful topic in which, I assume, Dr. Aubin can tear down the sacred cows. I’d be willing to bet it’ll also help introduce historiography to her broader history audience in important ways.

I’ve been hinting about my current project for a while, and am so excited to (finally) announce it! I’m writing FALSE IDOLS: HOW GREAT MAN HISTORY LEFT OUR PAST IN RUINS with @basicbooksgroup.bsky.social. Truly a dream come true, and I can’t wait for you all to read it.

Publishers marketplace screenshot, in a gold frame over a painting filled with marble busts. It reads:

Yale postdoctoral fellow and host of the podcast This Guy Sucked Claire E. Aubin's FALSE IDOLS, the story of how the Great Man Theory came to dominate history, spanning from antiquity to the 21st century as it uncovers the unscrupulous chroniclers who built a pantheon of larger-than-life heroes, and why these discredited myths and distortions continue to haunt us, to Brandon Proia at Basic, by Connor Brown at Andrew Nurnberg Associates (NA).

Today as students tried to define “History,” they ended up having to define “events” as well. This led to them discussing categorization. Ultimately they then considered how the questions we ask determine the categories and data connected. Man I love my job.

LOUDER You don’t have a right to be a senator. You don’t have a right to a social media following. You don’t have a right to a podcast audience. You don’t have a right to have people choose to have you on a show. If you lose these things bc of your behavior, your rights haven’t been violated.

DUE PROCESS IS FOR THE DEPRIVATION OF RIGHTS, NOT FOR THE AWARDING OF MASSIVE POWERS. Nobody has a constitutional right to be a US Senator. You can just decide that you've heard enough, and that the Nazi-curious misogynist with a record of rape and abuse doesn't need to get the keys to the country.

I agree here, except I don’t give him the benefit of the doubt. I used to think he focused on class to the exclusion of race due to being old school Marxist. Now I think he intentionally marginalizes people. The pattern is pretty clear. It’s bigotry.

Sanders has a terrible blind spot on race and gender. His (correct) focus on economics and class blind him and he thinks fixing bigotry is a matter of fixing economics. It’s a very dumb pov and one he holds on to (and the real reason he doesn’t win Dem primaries)
