Your regular reminder: If the Russians stop fighting, the war ends. If the Ukrainians stop fighting, their land will be occupied, their leaders will be killed, their history and language will be erased, their children will be kidnapped to serve Russia.

Mexico’s fight for independence is the triumph of a people determined to shape their own future. Today, I was proud to be the first New York City Mayor to march in Sunset Park’s Mexican Independence Day Parade alongside a community that has fostered cultural pride across generations.

Former Canada Prime Minister Jean Chrétien: "I have message for American friends...never mistake our generosity for weakness. Never mistake our tolerance for lack of determination. And never, never mistake our kindness for softness...We bow to no one." Jean Chrétien is an absolute gem 💎❤️🇨🇦
it’s wild that the heritage foundation wrote in text that the assault on trans woman particularly in sports is their first step in their efforts to completely abolish all Title IX protections and liberals still don’t believe it’s about more than trans women in sports
People get confused about the trans sports thing because at a glance it seems like a small issue that impacts a very small number of people and thus makes sense as a "reasonable" concession. But it isn't, because conceding that is accepting that a kid's trans identity is on some level fraudulent
You’ve gotta use AI because it’s the future. But also it’ll take your job. But also it’ll create a paradise on earth and solve most of our problems. But also it’ll end humanity soon. But also you’ll get left behind if you don’t use it right now.
Happy 72nd Birthday to Ruby Bridges, who at the age of 6 desegregated the New Orleans public schools. She’s younger than 30 senators and our last two presidents—and only 7 years older than Barack Obama. The past isn’t past.
“Local stores next to the protected bike-lane have seen a 49% increase in sales, compared to an average of 3% for Manhattan as a whole.” (Among MANY other public benefits.) Want To Make More Money? Build A Business On A Bike Lane. #CityMakingMath via @fastcompany.com #BikeLanesMeanBusiness
Want To Make Money? Build A Business On A Bike Lane
Research from New York City notes that newly installed protected bike lanes do more than keep bikers safe--they raise the income of the stores they are in front of.

There is absolutely no use for LLMs in teaching history. The entire notion of an LLM is antithetical to the study of history, in fact.
I can’t think of a single use case for LLMs in teaching history.
The campaign to sell AI to the public is actually just the fourth iteration of the same campaign from big tech. First it was crypto, then it was nfts, then the metaverse, and they’ve finally succeeded.
On this night in 1995, Ontario Provincial Police open fire on Anishinaabe land defenders at Ipperwash, killing Dudley George. Warriors blockade the highway after forcing the cops to retreat. The cops' plan to clear the land reclamation camp is a failure. anticolonialhistory.com/event/234/
This is so important. AI may be sold to us as something that will "help" in the classroom, or as an "essential competency" we do students a disservice not to train them in, but in the end the goal is the scale and monetize.
"AI" is marketed to administrators as a cheat code that unlocks unlimited "scaling". The reality is that it decimates the educational value of huge classes, but reckoning with that financial reality is too scary. Much easier to circumvent shared governance and double down on parroting the marketing.
The idea that classrooms are chiefly spaces for product testing, and that it is irresponsible pedagogy not to enforce this, is both cynical and vile, and “fuck off” is a cogent response from any professional educator to any non-teaching salescreep or tech-but-not-subject-matter expert who voices it.

"I didn't think a full, 6-day-per-week, 14-hour-per-day, in-office schedule was necessary to discharge my duties clicking the 'generate' button, followed by the 'approve' button, thousands of times a day on SlurryHose. But experience has shown me that I was wrong." buff.ly/RbEQoJg

I truly believe that the normalization of nighttime bookstores, museums, and libraries would change the world.
I know everyone has seen the Miyazaki clip of him saying that AI art is an insult to life itself and we humans are losing faith in ourselves but sometimes it still strikes me that he said that in 2016 and every single year the quote becomes more true and undeniable
Socialism is what they called public power. Socialism is what they called social security. Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations. Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people. —Harry Truman, 1952
Paul Calandra’s response to his govt deal in which an 🇺🇸 company got $66M taken from public ed and is now price gouging teachers: “Don't just run to TikTok and say, ‘Oh my gosh, look what they're doing to us.’ Help me make it better,” Calandra said.” The govt getting feedback from #OntEd teachers:

There are endless studies showing this and also the financial and societal benefits of universal basic income and or housing-first policies but the U.S. never goes for any of it because it would require allowing the poor to receive benefits that the rich consider “undeserved”
“A single-payer universal health care system could cover every American, save more than 100,000 lives a year, and still cost $1 trillion less than the system it would replace, according to a new preprint study led by researchers at the Yale School of Public Health.” ysph.yale.edu/news-article...
All I want is a cottage in the forest, a vintage copy of Lord of the Rings, a pouring rain, a crackling fire, a whistling kettle on the stove, an emotional support owl, and a basket of freshly-baked cinnamon rolls.
