“The stakes could not be more consequential. AI is already shaping who gets hired, who gets surveilled, who receives care, and whose voice is amplified or suppressed. […] These systems will reproduce and entrench uneven social conditions. […] Yet this outcome is not inevitable.”

This weekend I finally had time to read through @alondra.bsky.social's "Field Theory: AI as Social Science Question, Object & Tool" and I can't recommend it enough. Every mathematician who has been reading countless essays about AI and math should stop and read this direct.mit.edu/daed/article...

I'm hosting post-screening Q&A today at Film at Lincoln Center for "Once Upon a Time in Harlem" with Liani Greaves, the granddaughter of the late genius filmmaker Bill Greaves. *That* showing is sold out, but if you're in NYC, make sure you see this absolute masterpiece of documentary 💗✊🏽

Once Upon a Time in Harlem

In 1972, legendary filmmaker William Greaves gathered an extraordinary group of artists, writers, actors, musicians, and thinkers of the Harlem Renaissance. After more than 50 years, his son David Gre...

Last I checked, about ten years ago, there remain medieval manuscripts in the collection the only catalog handlists of which are the handwritten ones accessible in the reading room. I doubt that’s changed in the interim but I’m happy to be corrected. The point is that the BL has been STARVED.

So just considering the medieval manuscripts alone (and obviously the BL has so much more), the need for well-paid curators and catalogers as well as IT professionals is extreme. I’m not even going to get into the cyberattack, which took all of the digitized MSS offline—poof! Gone!

Interestingly, this BL survey of why you visited the BL most recently doesn't even offer 'to read books from the collection' as a possibility. Which is pretty much what I'd expect, tbh.

Reasons: exhibitions, tours, events, cafe, shopping, av materials.

During my PhD I worked as a curatorial fellow on a medieval manuscripts exhibition at the British Library and then was a research associate there for a time. This was when the Tories came in and the blow to funding was shocking. Hard to convey how austerity has battered this institution.

has the New York Times announced the roster of new progressive columnists they're bringing on board, the restructuring and creation of new verticals, and other dramatic steps they're taking to reflect the Real America they didn't properly understand or nah?

Abu Shehadeh, a highly respected journalist and intellectual, was snatched by 15 masked men. This is, in most likelihood, part of the effort to discredit the elections by claiming they were "stolen" by Palestinian voters. So far, no evidence has been presented.

Around 15 Israeli officers, some of them masked, raided the Jaffa home of journalist and colleague Abed Abu Shehadeh, a Palestinian citizen of Israel, at midnight on 3 November. Police refused to disclose where he is being held.

There are now enough states with Dem trifectas to pass the interstate compact on the national popular vote. The end of the Electoral college may be upon us.

It's sad to think that left-leaning humanities profs have talked for decades about the need for publicly funded humanities scholarship and education, only to be ignored by Democrats who just want education to be job training. Then the right-wing just goes ahead and does publicly funded humanities.

Moderates repeatedly crossing party lines to endorse and publicly vote for Republicans amidst the most racist and disastrous Republican administration in public memory ought to end the argument that’s it’s the left wing of the party that needs to prove it’s loyalty to the Democratic base.

Josh Turek says he didn't vote for a Democratic ticket, and instead voted republican for several races. And yet trans people are vilified for doing the same to him?

Google is trying to use its monopoly power to force AI into our public schools. No corporation should have the power to dictate how we teach our children.  Our public schools exist to serve students, not to grow the profit margins of Big Tech.

Google Will Turn Off Search for Schools That Reject A.I.

Google is making it easier to restrict its A.I. tools for students. But schools that block A.I. entirely will lose student access to Google’s search engine.
