If you're up early tomorrow morning for some reason, this is your reminder that the UK has a brilliant pass of the International Space Station, which passes overhead about 6.07am (check timings for where you are at heavens-above.com). Worth pointing out to anyone small who has woken you up...
So, let's try doing #duvetknowitschristmas here this evening? People are literally Driving Home For Christmas right now, which MIGHT JUST mean that they'll be sleeping somewhere unusual. 1/

Definition of a woman of ‘a certain age’: - Too old to be bullied & intimidated. - Too young to be patronised & ignored. Terrifying to men of a certain type.
Great to be with @skinnock.bsky.social in Ipswich today for the latest of our public events on the 10 year health plan. Loads of great conversation about the three shifts - to community, to digital, to prevention

UKRI is recruiting a Director to lead work on R&D and Place. A great opportunity for an action-oriented leader who wants to tackle the many well-documented issues of the geography of R&D in the UK! careersportal.taleo.net/careersectio...
Really delighted that Siva is stepping into my old shoes at The Kings Fund. A brilliant appointment.
We're pleased to announce that Siva Anandaciva has been appointed as Director of Policy, Events and Partnerships. Commenting on this, Sarah Woolnough said Siva is an 'authority on health and care' and will be a huge asset to the Fund. Find statement in full: kingsfund.org.uk/insight-and-...
I think the government has gone about this in the wrong way. No case to legislate so quickly. (if the govt thinks there is potentially a case for change). Much better to set up a review (Royal Commission even), debate the options with the public and then construct a package
Tomorrow Kim Leadbeater will introduce into the House of Commons her private member's bill on assisted dying. PMBs face a precarious route onto the statute book, often vulnerable to objections from small numbers of MPs. So what might we expect on this bill? 🧵
Really delighted to have the benefit of this serious set of skills to lead our working groups for the 10 year health plan www.gov.uk/government/g.... More info to follow on the members!

I'm old now Old enough to remember the smoke free legislation Everything that has been said today: End of the British boozer A fundamental assault on our freedoms and liberties World stops turning etc Was all said then Almost as if someone dusted off the BAT PR playbook and amplified it......
Smoking has been steadily declining in the UK for decades and will likely soon be <10% of all adults. Hard to take seriously the hospitality lobbyists claiming that a beer garden ban would have anything other than a very marginal impact on the industry
Are you interested in joining our brilliant research and learning team at @instituteforgov? We’re looking for people who have been working in and around government to bring their experience and expertise to our work, details 👇 www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/about-us/car...

I see the old myth that smoking bans reduce income in hospitality sector is being dragged out again. To be clear, the only studies showing any adverse effect use weak methodology and are funded by the tobacco industry www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles...
Review of the quality of studies on the economic effects of smoke-free policies on the hospitality industry
