Hard to explain how difficult babysitting norms used to be. When I was 14-15 I used to occasionally watch the five (!!!) kids down the street. We were close enough in age (<2 years between me and the oldest boy) that there was active conflict, which wasn’t seen as a reason I shouldn’t babysit
Asking gamblers why they’re gambling and actually believing them when they say “I see no other way to get ahead in life” is incredible.
I'm trying to be less belligerently factional on here. Partially because I want to be a better person and partially because I've lost the plot and don't even know who is on what side or indeed, which side I am on at this point.
Annoying myself noticing who gets the “we must exterminate woo” exceptions here on bsky dot social
I wrote this back in May and am reposting to observe that I have found myself failing to uphold it after one (1) day of too much Bluesky.
Practicing not fighting on the Internet.
It doesn't happen often, but sometimes somebody makes a post here on Bear Blog that I totally hate. Maybe I think their analysis of politics is not very good, or they're making some harsh judgements about a field of work or study they (in my estimation) don't really understand. Maybe they're painting with a very broad brush and their worldview is just too limited or depressed to really back up their statements (in my opinion). Since this is a social network of a sort, it is very tempting to make...

Finished reading: What We Can Know by Ian McEwan 📚 The conceit of this book is really my jam; however, the academic recursion was almost too much for even me, and there was a major plot point involving a grad student revolt against… a class they signed up for?! Confused about that one still. ★★★☆☆
We had a new HVAC installed are so we are living one glorious month where we set the temperature based on personal preferences only! To set a baseline from which we can start to make some cost saving decisions
This is obviously true and if you don’t believe it, you could talk to every other person present in your life or actually most likely you can just consult your own non-hobby and non-special interest purchase habits
Online shopping eliminated these gatekeepers and disintermediated the market, allowing consumers to express their desires more directly. And it turns out that what people really want is cheap disposable goods, not more expensive but higher quality stuff that lasts a long time.
Parents are commonly asked to provide shared school supplies for the classroom (e.g. paper, pencils) and hooboy do people have opinions about Not Their Kids using the supplies THEY bought. Of course it’s all downstream of people not wanting to fund their local schools through taxes, either!
Where is this idea that LLMs are female-coded come from. The main models are Claude and ChatGPT, and honestly one of the main problems we have with LLMs is people, particularly chuds, don’t second guess them enough — would that be true if they thought it was a woman?
The origin of the housing crisis isn't a lack of investor desire to build housing (even affordable housing, thanks to LIHTC and so forth), its your neighbor jan, who believes it will cause noise pollution (people living their lives), and your neighbor Tim, who believes [vile racism] working together
All the comments are “I already learned about this in Who Framed Roger Rabbit” and almost none of them note that the linked Wikipedia article doesn’t actually say this
people are afraid of nature to such a level that we’re ngmi
I hate AI, I use AI, I am unsettled by how many people talk about AI like it’s a benevolent fairy or a wizard, also the people talking like it’s a wicked fairy or some type of demon. These are confusing times
nice joke, lol, reminds me of this unrelated political thing i can’t stop talking about
My MIL found out about my new interest in film cameras so now I’ve got two. I actually maybe should’ve mentioned it to her before going to eBay but I had no idea she’d taken a photography class in 1981!
So it seems like @grain.social works like how I want these things to: you use your bsky.social log in there but the content is totally separate, rather than it being a limited viewer for just Bluesky. But nobody is on it afaict
I reactivated because I wanted to try out the ATProto IG knockoff and the problem with having one account for everything is my profile on there looks like this
Scaling back on social media has made me feel worse about society, because I don’t know what anybody around me is talking about anymore and when I go look it up it’s awful. I plan to continue this since social media is clearly bad for me but don’t worry I’m not basking in the magic of IRL connection

I mostly like this poster fwiw but this is exactly, like word-for-word exactly what people who refused to vote for Harris over Gaza were and are saying
Me liking all y’all’s image posts without being able to see them lol

I am startled at the “the kids are alright” responses to this, 100% of Gen Z fascists are answering this question with “yes”, no that’s not the whole 60% but Gen Z conservatives are total psychos and that’s showing up here for sure
Disturbing finding in Marist’s June poll. “Americans may have to resort to violence in order to get the country back on track” Gen Z 🟢 Agree 60% 🔴 Disagree 40% Millennials 🟢 Agree 46% 🔴 Disagree 54% Gen X 🟢 Agree 35% 🔴 Disagree 65% Boomers+ 🟢 Agree 20% 🔴 Disagree 77%
Very tempted to make this my new header image
The progressive version of Twitter offers a world of vicious, sneering odium that only those who see themselves as kinder humans dish out 🔗 https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/07/03/is-there-anything-more-pathetic-than-a-bluesky-user/?WT.mc_id=tmgoff_li_pathetic-than-a-bluesky-user/
As I consider getting a camera more and more I am more charmed by the idea of a FILM camera — rationally this feels like a mistake though
