For as long as I’ve been a reporter in this city the complaint has been that we build too many giant luxury condos in a few places and not enough medium density housing across neighbourhoods. But this week reaffirmed why that approach is so baked into the DNA and political culture of Vancouver.
Credit to @lucymaloney.bsky.social for being the only Vancouver city councillor (!?!?) to vote in favour of the Villages Plan to legalize medium-sized apartments in a large number of neighbourhoods across the city. Otherwise a major disappointment for the city.

This was the easiest part of the Vancouver Plan to implement; Ken Sim directed staff to prioritize it. If we can't pass this, what's the point of any of it? All housing policy work here is in limbo.
Got to try out the new Solaris trolleybus today. It was a smooth ride and the AC is going to be a godsend in the summer. Very excited for it to enter service!

Again, Vision Zero isn't something special that's only being implemented in Vancouver. I wish our councillors would do basic research about the benefits of Vision Zero plans for car drivers, before asking these non-sensical questions.

This is what a car-brained councillor will do: Pit vulnerable road users against drivers. Don't be fooled by what councillors are "trying" to tell you with their campaigning and messaging about reaching Vision Zero – see what their mind really speaks during City Council sessions.

I don't want to be cynical, I really want to see these barriers installed. But I'm not sure this motion actually moves us closer. The lack of accountability is jarring (the audacity of Dominato to blame staff for a situation she helped orchestrate!) These should have been in place already.
