Vacancy — Postdoctoral Researcher in Open AI research for social sciences and humanities
<p>The Humane AI research priority area of the University of Amsterdam is looking for a new PostDoc to amend our existing team (<a href="https://humane-ai.nl/">https://humane-ai.nl/</a>). AI is everywhere. Chatbots, translation tools, shopping assistants, hyper-personalised services - as Large Language Models become widely accessible, they're reshaping how we live, work, play and connect. This rapid shift sparks big questions: Whose norms and values shape this AI-driven society—and who gets left behind? What are the rules that govern the development and deployment of Generative AI different sectors of society, and towards what kind of society will they steer us? Is the risked-based approach to AI. </p>

Serving as an editor taught me the limits of academic ideals for open, accessible scholarship, which tend to get smashed into the cliffs of institutional inertia, profit motives, and extractive norms. Some orgs are better than others, but their base tendencies are varying degrees of parasitism 🔥
Nothing radicalizes an academic more than serving on a journal or professional society and learning just how predatory and extractive the publishing industry is. They will definitely use AI to try to increase profits at the expense of quality. In practice, harder to implement open access at scale.

As a cognitive scientist, I'm embarrassed at how long it took me to realise that emotion matters a lot, not just for understanding humans, but for understanding any thinking agent. Why? Because emotion is an indicator of what that agent values, and values are essential to rationality. Examples:
There's much talk these days about what's required for "real" intelligence, such as world models and the like. One thing we know about the human evolution of it: it required/requires emotion. That may have been better appreciated in 1938 than today. archive.org/details/in.e...
