McGill has a productive group of freshwater scientists working on fish & invertebrate ecology, evolution, invasive species, ecotoxicology and global change. We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow that can forge new collaborations among us. See our job ad here: scasscsa.mcjobboard.net/jobs/235865

Postdoctoral Fellow in Freshwater Science

The GRIL node at McGill University comprises seven aquatic scientists (see below) that span a broad range of expertise; we are advancing knowledge regarding landscape-scale processes, long-term change...

🌊🧪 Marine snow particles sinking from the surface ocean are critical for deep sea food webs and the oceanic carbon cycle. How fast they sink determines how much carbon reaches the deep ocean, but measuring their speed directly in the field is a challenge in oceanography.

This is a great read about why the "Ocean Cleanup" project didn't work as well as hoped. There are so many parallels with other well-intentioned efforts -- including in the climate space -- that don't pan out because folks ignored the science.... therevelator.org/why-ocean-cl...

Why The Ocean Cleanup Hasn’t Solved the Plastic Pollution Crisis • The Revelator

Global problems are rarely solved by one person or invention. The Ocean Cleanup didn’t work, for the reasons experts said it wouldn’t. What can we learn from this?

A massive marine heat wave in the Pacific, spanning an area 8x the contiguous US, is expected to intensify storms, exacerbate heat waves on land, and raise sea levels, particularly along the California coast. Climate change will increase the frequency and intensity of marine heat waves.

The Pacific Ocean is running a fever. Why that’s an ominous sign.

A marine heat wave covering an area eight times the size of the United States could soon fuel serious storms and extreme heat.

The Bernhardt Lab is heading to #CSEE2026 and we are excited to share our science! From Ontario to Nunavut and theoretical ecology, data synthesis and experiments, to community-based research - we study how biodiversity is changing and what that means for human well-being. Check out our talks! 🌡️🐟🦎🌎

A biologically parameterized model of growth and honest measurement error in the mix. This paper is a quantum leap in handling diverse and messy cross-cultural and archaeological data on human growth, where papers usually fit arbitrary polynomials and ignore measurement error. Link in quote

Height and weight data simulated for 30 individuals measured every year from birth to
age 25 using equations 1 and 2. Parameter values defining the simulated mean cumulative
growth trajectory and five component functions are derived from Matsigenka girls, while
individual-level variance around the mean trajectory is derived from U.S. girls. The prior growth
trajectory (red) used to fit the model to the simulated data is derived from the mean trajectory of
U.S. girls. Corresponding mean cumulative velocity trajectories in green and orange are
decreasing (after age 14) from left to right. Bunce et al. (2025) explains the complications of
fitting (and simulating) weight data using the model.

Surprise, surprise, surprise. This study uses rats exposed to fungicide, but your ‘exposome’ will likely dictate not only your health but the health of your family, through epigenetics changes in germ cells that can remain imprinted for generations. #Science 🧪

Health effects linger 20 generations after rats are exposed to fungicide

Scientists say the findings are a warning about the kinds of chemical that people are exposed to in the environment.
