What a welcome conversation and culture change on maternity. Many people pushed me to have - what they called a ‘normal birth.’ I am glad I pushed back and did what was right for me and baby, but we shouldn’t have to fight and not everyone can. Luton North families will feel this change.

Great news! Well done Bev Craig and the team. Labour's support was well over double that of Reform in the first round of votes and was only just shy of winning on first preference alone. Bev is formidable and will be an excellent Labour Mayor of Greater Manchester 🌹

Following the new Prime Minister’s appointments, I am joining the Northern Ireland Office as a Minister. This means that I will be leaving the position of Chair of the Women and Equalities Select Committee. I have loved every minute of it and am proud of what we have achieved together. 👇

Statement: Following the new Prime Minister’s appointments, I am joining the Northern Ireland Office as a Minister. This means that I will be leaving the position of Chair of the Women and Equalities Select Committee. I have loved every minute of it and am proud of what we have achieved together. We made changes happen. I was so proud to finally see bereavement leave extended for women and their partners who experience miscarriage, after a long campaign and far too much suffering from all of us who know this pain. I wanted to tackle difficult topics well, find common ground, and scrutinise effectively to ensure equalities law works for everybody. In nearly two years leading the Committee, that is what we have achieved together. This doesn’t mean everyone agreeing but disagreeing well and compromising - putting aside ego to see progress - because progress isn’t inevitable. Our work helped bring about important changes in non-disclosure agreements, FGM and the abuse of non-consensual intimate images We launched landmark reports covering medical misogyny, the music and comedy industries, gendered Islamophobia, Black homelessness, the d/Deaf community, the rights of older people, community cohesion and many more. During evidence sessions with equalities ministers and the EHRC, we held them to account. We highlighted concerns raised to us from across the country on equality law, to ensure legislation is effective and works as intended. Thank you to all committee members, Phil and the team of hard working, knowledgeable Clerks who are at the heart of the work we do, and the many witnesses who gave evidence to our inquiries. I look forward to seeing what this brilliant committee does next and I know the new chair will love this amazing work and team.

It is an honour to have been asked by the Prime Minister to serve as a Minister in the Northern Ireland Office. I will continue working hard for the people of Luton North - and look forward to supporting this government deliver the change we need.
