It's been a difficult few days, but today I actually wrapped up and sent off an actual journal article to an actual journal -- possibly the first I've managed this year! It was first written, submitted, revised, resubmitted, and rejected in 2020, when it fell entirely off my radar.

I'm reading instructions to authors for various journals. Most are all straightforward (but who puts a MINIMUM wordcount -- and then makes it 6500?!), but this tripped me up: "please avoid the use of personal pronouns." Honestly don't know how to write history of philosophy without using pronouns.

Ideas could be exciting, but the enthusiasm would evaporate on contact with the attempt at carrying out those ideas. It wasn't that the execution was more difficult than expected, it was that acting on the idea was somehow less 'real' than the idea, and would require continuous disciplined effort.
