I hate the ritual of having to text your entire local social circle after a mass shooting in your area, praying that Death hasn't visited your house. My thoughts are with those who may receive the worst news of their lives tonight. I love you, Seattle. We'll endure, even if we shouldn't have to.

Former NSF Graduate Research Fellow here: the idea that promising students will succeed without the support of diverse, federally funded, academically independent institutions of higher ed is absurd. Science doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Thriving research universities enable scientific success.

Initial notes: There's a lot of emphasis on the GRFP (and similar funding mechanisms, such as CAREER awards) because of its ability to target high-performing individuals on the basis of merit—in contrast to institutions and diversity programs.

Refocus on the Individual Scientist: Put the working researcher back at
the center of America’s scientific enterprise. Free them from the growing
administrative burdens that now weigh them down for nearly half their
working hours. Bet on people, not just projects, by expanding portable
graduate fellowships like the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP), backing early-career independence, and scaling long-horizon grants for the best and brightest modeled
on National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director’s Pioneer Award. Open
alternative pathways beyond standard academia, and ensure that selection
rests purely on merit, not the political fashions of the day

When guys are like “that’s not rape, all my friends have done that,” that’s exactly what we’re talking about. That’s the problem. Rape is so common and unpunished that a guy could casually reveal all his friends are rapists and not see it as a problem.

Profoundly sad (and angry) about today's SCOTUS ruling against transgender athletes. The bigotry and racism of several recent rulings are hard to absorb. My heart goes out to transgender people and their families, especially the parents of transgender kids (I know many). I feel your sadness today.

of course they never cared about Pride, but the world in which they pretend to care is vastly better than the one in which they don't pretend and we are seeing it in real time we want the money to think there's more profit in being performatively woke than performatively bigoted

I mean no disrespect but I can't believe we're still pretending "corporations never cared about Pride" is an interesting thing to say. even during peak corp Pride I think you had to be exceptionally dim to not get what was going on lol like yeah I think I know Chipotle would kill me for a nickel
