Deeply disappointing to see Libdem leader now supporting more drilling in the North Sea - it will add to global volume of climate emissions, drive climate breakdown & send a dangerous signal to the rest of the world

Sir Ed Davey says Jackdaw gas field 'makes sense' as decision looms for government

A consultation on the gas field - located 150 miles northeast of Aberdeen - closed last month, with the prime minister set to make a decision.

This sign from Just Stop Oil’s latest protest in the UK really hit home for me that the powers that be, in thrall to fossil fuel industry overlords, are trying so hard to quash the message - that we need to be on a war footing to decarbonise and STOP BURNING FOSSIL FUELS.

Really silly to see people grasping at straws against the reality of global climate change by still using examples from July 1936 (or 1976). The reality is increasingly obvious. Graphics are from slides in a presentation of mine, which use NASA/GISS GISTEMPv4 data (and their 1951-1980 baseline).

Screenshot of a slide showing two global maps with temperature anomalies in either July 1936 or July 2026. July 2026 is much warmer than 1936, except for a small region in the central United States during the Dust Bowl. Two maps side-by-side (June 1976 and June 2026) for surface temperature anomalies. It is much warmer globally in 2026 than 1976, which is more isolated for the heat extreme over the UK.

The UK partial eclipse was fun. During the full eclipse back in 1990 it was particularly eerie because as the darkness fell, all the birds suddenly went quiet. That wasn’t as obvious this time because there are far fewer birds these days.

I snagged a 1943 edition of Coleridge’s ‘The Ancient Mariner’, illustrated beautifully by Mervyn Peake! Iron Maiden fans will recognise verses below. What’s it about? As Dickinson says, “This is what NOT to do if a bird shits on you!” Basically, treat nature well or it’ll bite you on yer arse!!

It's very sad that the United States, with perhaps the best climate science, scientists, and science communicators in the world, has consistently had the very worst climate-denying politicians and governments. Why? Simple: The powerful fossil-fuel industry and the money they shower on policymakers.

The world’s largest sand battery got through Finland’s harshest winter in years. 2,000 tonnes of sand, heated to 500-600°C by cheap power, feeding district heating in Pornainen. And it worked. Result from one install: oil down 100%, emissions down 70%. Industrial process heat is the real prize.

Scientists at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany warned that if deforestation, which decreased in 2025, increases again, the Amazon could suffer “widespread rainforest dieback” and cross a tipping point in the 2030s. By @alecluhn.com for @NewScientist.com

Deforestation could trigger Amazon tipping point in the 2030s

At least 15 per cent of the Amazon has already been lost, and further destruction could unleash widespread rainforest dieback with as little as 1.5°C of global warming

Spiralling global temperatures (1850-2026) It is exactly 10 years since I first put this animated graphic of changes in global temperature online. #ClimateSpiral It instantly went viral. People watched it over and over again. It still offers the power to shock a decade on.
