That Joshua Bonehill-Paine is a suitable Tory candidate but Grant Shapps and Gavin Barwell have been excluded is quite a good indicator of how many seats the Tories will realistically regain at the next election.

The state of this. A lovely day out for Badenoch and Philp, playing dress up and making pronouncements about early release schemes - having left the country with one hundred available men's prison places, after fourteen years in charge. You read that right. One hundred places.

Opposition Leader Kemi Badenoch and Shadow Home Office Secretary Chris Philp, in high-vis police jackets enjoy a photo opportunity.

1) I doubt this will happen because constituency polling tends to oversample precisely the kind of “I always vote left, and in lieu of another way to signal my distaste for Farage, Binface it is” type. 2) If it does happen it will really show that the Tories ought to be able to win this!

Fascinating change in BBC news bulletins about Reform. Farage announcement on small boats only gets the third spot and is balanced by critics saying he's trying to distract from allegations over his finances. Quite the change from the uncritical coverage earlier this year.

Sixty years ago, England beat West Germany 4-2 to win the 1966 World Cup. England's third goal was much-debated in Germany, going down in footballing folklore as 'das Wembley-Tor'. Enormous crowds welcomed West Germany's "honourable losers" (Times) home the following day.

"[N]o UEFA national teams will participate in any FIFA competition for so long as these proposals remain alive, unless this proposal has been abandoned in its entirety and binding assurances have been given that FIFA will never again open its governance or competitions to private ownership."

💣 UEFA eviscerates Gianni Infantino. "The World Cup is not for sale." "This is not merely a profound failure of leadership, but an abdication of FIFA’s duty as the custodian of world football." "We will never lend this model our legitimacy."

Wonderful detail from old note-books I am currently going through: ‚In 10-15 yrs UK will be part of the €‘, said the then German amb in March 2004. instead, 9 yrs later PM Cameron announced the in/out-referendum, 12 yrs later UK decided to leave the EU. So much for the predictive power of diplomats.

Time and again climate change is treated as though it were binary: we cannot prevent it, so ok, it’s there let’s embrace it. That’s entirely wrong: it is a sliding scale. We cannot prevent 1.5 degrees. But maybe 3? Or 5?
