This Day in Labor History: September 5, 1934. The governor of North Carolina called out the National Guard to aid mill owners in the textile strike overtaking their state and the east coast. Let's talk the critical 1934 textile strike and the state repression of it that forced FDR to pass labor law!

I've never seen such an effort to censor a document as I have the Amnesty International report on gender critical groups because of JK Rowling. They removed the report from the Wayback Machine and now I got a DMCA strike on my Google Drive for having it. It was deleted and removed from my account.

A screenshot of an email viewed in dark mode with the subject line "Google DMCA Violation." The email from Google informs the recipient that they have received a notification under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) that some of their materials allegedly infringe on copyrights. It explains the removal process, mentions that notice details will be posted on Lumen, warns against repeated violations, and lists one affected Google Drive URL at the bottomA nearly identical mobile browser screenshot of the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. It shows a search for the same Amnesty International UK resources URL, resulting in the same message: "This URL has been excluded from the Wayback Machine."A mobile browser screenshot of the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. A URL for an Amnesty International UK resources page is entered in the search bar, but the page displays the message: "This URL has been excluded from the Wayback Machine."

HEADS-UP, NERDS! I'm leading a walking tour of Morgan Park for Chicago for Chicagoans on Sunday, 9/20 at 11. It will start at this lovely station, allowing travelers to experience the delights of the Rock Island line. Free, but this is for a nonprofit. Please give them money! Tickets available 9/6.

Continuing my sporadic tour of the Beverly/Morgan Park historic station district. This 1892 station at 111th is a rarity for having a 3 story section originally used to house railroad workers. It was designed by John T Long, better known as the architect behind the Yale Apartments in Englewood.

🚨 BREAKTHROUGH: MIT engineers develop a breath test that detects pneumonia in minutes no X-rays, no lab wait. Just a single breath Two MIT engineers, Loza Tadesse and Aditya Garg, have developed a breath test that can detect pneumonia in minutes.

Maybe Trump is the exit dose this whole fucked-up system needed? It’s like chemotherapy — the poison ALMOST kills the system but out of that chaos comes the death of the cancer? If this tears apart MAGA *and* neoliberalism then go man go.

I’ve been saying this so much of late. Empathy and imagination are joined when we are immersed, and allow us to be another age or color or gender; feel a different desire. Bad art makes it harder, but lack of imagination or empathy in a reader is worse.

"I specifically can't relate to this character" has become the dominant form of art criticism and it's the saddest thing I've ever seen. Imagine telling Kafka you're not a giant bug so the story doesn't resonate. The entire point of fiction is feeling something about someone who isn't you.

a perversion is under way. grotesque series of lies by a traitor and convicted felon masquerading as 🇺🇸 leader on live tv. add to that child-sex trafficking predator, rapist, murderer and that begins to describe the macabre twilight zone spectacle. #SOTU

A MN protester accused of assaulting ICE officer had case dropped after vids showed no assault. LA protester accused of assaulting ICE w/ “hat” had case dropped; judge said govt acted in “bad faith” In Chicago, 92 ppl were arrested for assault/impeding ICE; 0 convicted DOJ keeps lying and losing:

DoJ cases against protesters keep collapsing as officers’ lies are exposed in court

String of embarrassing defeats for prosecutors as experts condemn DoJ effort to cast people as ‘violent perpetrators’

I believe in giving credit where it’s due. Hang the entire Gorsuch concurrence in the Louvre. Master class in telling your colleagues they’ve lost their fucking minds.

Honestly sick of science journalism implying human minds have talents no other species does. Ofc other animals have _some_ interiority and imagination. Stop perpetuating the myth that humans have biological differences which support our “dominion” over the earth and animals.

An ape having pretend tea parties with scientists suggests humans may not be the only species capable of imagining.🐵 ☕️ buff.ly/pxMBoIX
