I’ve read these and they’re extremely good! I’m always looking for minimal prep, short timeframe, opportunities to play hard, and no one does it like Jason, and if you’ve been larping for ages, or if you’re freeform-curious, go pay money for this and play one or all of them ASAP!

I've been working on Mousetrap since October. It's my most ambitious and complex game yet, so playtesting has been slow, in odd chunks, and with extra clunk. But I'm thinking the core pieces may have fallen into place today, thanks to collaborators/playtesters. More to go. But lots of progress.

Today @jenkatwrites.bsky.social @sociable-turtle.bsky.social and I playtested @backwardsttrpg.bsky.social 's new game, "Mousetrap." It was a fantastic experience and a mental workout - and yet another game I adore by Asa! Here are some preliminary thoughts (we are not done playing). 1/

In this picture, the first page of the game Mousetrap by Asa Donald is shown on the screen of a black laptop, which rests on a wooden table next to a notebook with some handwritten notes and a picture of Kronborg Castle in Helsingør, Denmark show on a second screen.

New arrivals! Persuasion I’ve played before and adore, Sykes-Picot I’ve wanted for a while. But Swords Against. Haunting. I’ve yet to decipher much (and I’ve not opened the letter) but what I can see is dragging me deeper, beckoning me to lose myself in the mystery (and see myself in it, perhaps.)

Three boxed games propped up on a gray couch. Left to right, they are titled Persuasion, Swords Against, and Sykes-Picot.

“Why are men afraid of women?” “If your strength is only the other's weakness, you live in fear,” Ged said. “Yes; but women seem to fear their own strength, to be afraid of themselves.” “Are they ever taught to trust themselves?” Ged asked “No,” she said.

Seven-Part Pact

A fantastical, ornate TTRPG from Possum Creek about the might and folly of powerful wizards bound by a venerable Pact.

(oh, i should have added-- i don't mind if i lose _because losing is part of the emotional experience of the art_. if you play a game which has loss conditions but only ever win, you have not experienced the whole thing yet.)

if you haven't tended to play games critically (choosing to engage with the rules on their own terms and then observing, as you play, what the rules are doing to your psychology) i super-recommend trying it out. it is a great way to experience art.

Tomorrow we begin! Day 1 is the Necromancer w/@brianflaherty.bsky.social of @manysidedmedia.bsky.social & @eclipse.gay How do you handle the gates of death? How do you stop the enemies of the pact? Join us at 5p eastern tomorrow to find out!

In this vein- I just started running a Stonetop, and for our first adventure I decided I would prep only their destination in detail and a loose sense of where they would be along the way and what categories of things they might run into, but everything on the way I’d roll on a table for, live. 1/

and so I think in more simulationist-leaning games, it's important to have some of that chaos, that unresolvedness. sometimes things just don't work out or connect or mean anything clear, so you move on. decenter the player [character] not just in the world but also to themselves

Public Domain Art is the lifeblood of small tabletop rpgs, but it can be a nightmare trying to find the right art and license. This week, I’ve re-uploaded my old list from 2020 (with updates) of public domain websites. That's 500,000+ public domain paintings, photos, maps, and film. Link below 🔗👇
