Caleb leaves out a lot on purpose. The gods interfered with his life and Alan’s; he’s learned from experience not to tempt anyone with insights into that level of power. It requires expertise to be able to say, “I do not know the answer to that question, and that is becauae thus far scholarly consensus is that we do not have the knowledge needed at this time to answer that question.” Sometimes “I don’t know” is a far more rigorous answer than people might think.

Want, Need, and Lie Any character that has a character arc will have a character want, a character need, and a character lie. They will also have a lesson needed. The Character Want is their starting goal. The Character Want is what the character thinks they need.

And you’re likely going to want the antagonist to have a negative change arc. If you aren’t working on a major character, then think back to your theme and what you need the character to do in the story. And base your choice of arc on those things.

Spider-man’s origin story is a positive change arc. Darth Vader’s origin story is a negative change arc. And Captain America’s stories are almost all flat arcs. Is you want a happy ending, you’re going to want the protagonists to have a positive change arc or a flat arc.

Two truths and a lie about my WIP: 1. There is a decades-long time skip from the previous Scaleshifter installment 2. The MC is on the ace spectrum, probably Demi 3. No previously-loved characters die in this book #fantasyindiesaugust

Part of why Caleb uses lying as a defense mechanism is how bad he is at taking criticism. Until he can get out of survival mode, he’s convinced mistakes will make people turn on him, so he pretends not to make any. This is obviously good for his long-term mental health! #awesomecharacters
