Adult life is like "Having friends and hobbies prevents you from getting lonely, experiencing health problems, and developing dementia," and then adult life does absolutely everything it can to prevent you from having friends and hobbies.

I think this is an excellent thread from Mr. Berlatsky about Senator Ossoff, and why he might be the candidate to beat in 2028. I'd prefer someone more like Pritzker, but I think I'd have a much easier time supporting Ossoff (who isn't afraid to call the GOP white supremacists) than say Newsom.
it's probably significant that ossoff is a white guy representing a very Black electorate. 1
"Instead of doomscrolling when I'm sad, I'm just gonna play instead." 70 hours of playtime in 2 weeks I don't know if I'm supposed to look at it positively, since I'm having fun instead of just being sad. But looking at it negatively, a significant chunk of my day is spent on just being sad.
Big news! The Vtuber Pride Calendar 2028 applications are open! The 2027 version was a big hit, so we're doing one again, and we wanna include MORE Pride Vtubers that can join us! Applications run from October 8th till October 31st. forms.gle/8BnKEQqVsUBN...

Young teenagers are less likely to identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual than a few years ago, according to a new analysis. “It really does look like a free fall,” Jean Twenge, a professor of psychology, said. “But what’s causing it is unclear.”
While it may seem unnecessary to many of you, today seems like a good day to remind everyone that Trans Rights Are Human Rights and the trans community will always have my axe.
Democrats better learn quickly that they must stand for the people, all of the people, not just the people that Independents don't think are icky, all of the people and all of their civil rights. Or, they can become the American Labour party.
Democrats will never learn.
"Blinded by the light / revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night" Thanks to Manfred Mann, I always thought it was 'wrapped up like a douche' instead of 'revved up like a deuce' until I heard Springsteen's original version.
Name a song lyric you've misheard.
You're probably tired of my takes on "AI", but please understand that I deal with the consequences of this technology daily at my job. It's absolutely soul crushing to watch otherwise intelligent people become so addicted to this slop that they're losing their ability to function without it.
It's very telling when an "AI" defender claims that the only ones opposing it are not in the tech industry. I've been programming for two decades, professionally for eleven years of that time, and I strongly oppose it because I know exactly what it does & what the intent behind the technology is.
the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it
Man who won’t give his employees piss breaks claims many piss breaks on the horizon
I'm following some great writers, artists, and creators on here. It's made my experience with this platform so much better.
Always funny to watch people who have surreptitiously fallen to the AI siren start defending deranged AI stan behavior and explain their thinking
can someone explain to me why my fellow liberals are always seemingly in the throes of angst at the notion that bad people exist and vote? even when it is clear liberal ideas are winning, theres always someone wailing "but they still vote for him/them!" so what?
Been in IT for over a decade (specifically development), and I feel the exact same way.
It annoys me just how much "turn it off and turn it on again" is actually the way to solve 80% of computer/phone/tech issues. On one hand: Actually great because it's simple and easy. On the other: generations of IT dudes being smug because they were right all along.

Complained about computer speed and husband reminded me to restart it every decade or so. This is violence.
Another classic, not sure if I've already posted this one here.
I've been saying this about "vibe coding" for years now, so it's nice to see that this study reached the same conclusion. I'd tell the "AI" advocate & defenders to read this study, but they'll probably feed it into a slop machine and only read the inaccurate summary that gets spit out.
Harvard just dropped a study AI productivity in software engineering and it found the average increase in productivity from using Claude code is.....zero and for exactly the reasons you'd think fion.ac/jellyfish.pdf
Margaret Hamilton was both a pioneer and a brilliant programmer during a time when software engineering - a term she coined - wasn't common or even well respected. Her work laid the foundation for modern error handling, and software is far more reliable thanks to her designs. May she rest in peace.
This picture will always be iconic. RIP Margaret Hamilton who wrote the software that successfully guided NASA’s Apollo missions through the moon.
"Curse that incompetent Doctor Zoidberg!"
Wrong answers only. My bet: thanks for all the fish.
Lotta smart and talented people wasting time and effort to defend LLMs. What are we doing here? Answer this: if GPT, Claude, etc. all magically disappeared overnight (chatbots, coding agents, all of it), would we actually be *worse* off? No we wouldn't. But people can't convince themselves to agree
This is a good illustration of how so much of AI theft isn't indirect (ie, data sucked into a model to train the chatbot) - it's actually **direct** copying, but *enabled* by GenAI. Of course it is: chatbots absolutely suck at creating good, new stuff.

I'm increasingly frustrated that people who are anti-AI aren't being taken seriously, and taking a page out of my thoughts on why the anti-trans backlash got as far as it did I'm starting to think the anti-AI side isn't extreme enough.
I am aware of the history of 20th century fascism and grew up around Holocaust survivors. When fascism returns, they said, expect indifference or outright cowardice from 90% of your friends, neighbors and colleagues. AND YET, it still shocks me to see this groveling cowardice in real time.

I just can't win today. Water heater broke, Windows 11 keeps crashing, got a migraine, and got into a huge argument with a friend.
"this wouldn't have existed without AI anyway, it's not taking away any potential jobs or opportunities" if you do not have the willingness or drive to make something without AI, then it shouldn't exist AI is built off of stolen labor. Want art? Do or fund the labor.
I've been doing some contract work with the Jackbox team to help them find dope games for their publishing arm. If you're working on something fun or know devs looking for potential funding, PLEASE send them my way. Hit me via LinkedIn - www.linkedin.com/in/kahlief-adams
