Major oil firms make $93bn profits in just 3 months amid war and climate crisis. They shift profits, dodge taxes, fuel poverty and inflation. They don't bear the social cost of their business. Forever holding people/govts to ransom. Polluters must pay. Need windfall tax now.

"Dear Diary The launch of our scheme to use the Royal Navy to stop small boats has gone exactly to plan. It is so patently absurd that it is all anyone can talk about, providing the perfect distraction from all our dodgy financial dealings"
Approval of east London datacentre labelled ‘slap in the face’ for local democracy. Datacentre prioritised over building affordable homes. Little attention to environmental issues. Govt overturning local council refusal is not devolution or democracy. Big business always wins.

We are in the third drought in five years. We have the National Trust and NFU - those radical types - sounding the alarm on unprecedented temperatures. But so little from any single figure in politics talking about the climate crisis.

Few people understand that the UK university system is in crisis, but even fewer realise that many of the people losing their jobs are amongst the best in their fields
So it's farewell to the History subject area at the University of Hertfordshire, not the first nor the last to go. One of the best departments in the country, just extinguished like a snap of the fingers. Think of the waste. (1/2)

Absolutely shameful piece. Even if a "Mediterranean" future were desirable - and a third of a million people are currently fleeing an inferno - what about those parts of the world being made uninhabitable? Where do their people go? Heath doesn't want them here. www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/2026...
Britain can’t stop climate change. Scrap net zero and embrace Mediterranean life
We’ve lost the war against global warming so let’s learn to handle hotter weather

🧵UK media has been duped about net-zero (again) The playbook is identical: 1️⃣ Find a big scary number 2️⃣ Speed-dial non-specialist hacks 3️⃣ Do say “serious economic damage” 4️⃣ Don’t say “we pretended gas is free” 5️⃣ That's it! Many papers still fell for it 🤷
Reupping my @prospectmagazine.co.uk piece on how Israel systematically razed Gaza. One man who grew up in Rafah, the southern Gaza city now largely destroyed, said this to me: “You can say you miss your city if it still exists. It’s gone, you know” /4 www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/world/middle...

I used to model the prison population. It is staggering how massively counterproductive most prison sentences are. Most sentences are short sentences. Long enough to destroy the basis for a normal productive life outside (housing, job etc). Too short to do anything productive (rehab, training etc.)
A leader willing to work across party lines; tackle tough issues; level with voters; address issues affecting young (education, employment), the old and infirm; rich and poor; North and South. Am I dreaming ? www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
Andy Burnham wants to fix social care. It’s personal for him and for a lot of us too
Finally a grownup is in charge who speaks to voters as fellow adults. If he fixes this, he’ll achieve more than most other PMs

Barclays Bank is Europe's biggest funder of fossil fuels. Pushing climate change, El nino, crop failures, hunger as profit opportunity, urging investors to speculate on price of food, fertilizer, commodities. Prices and food bills will rise. Profiting from destruction that banks financed.

It's noticeable, too, that there wasn't a single question on the climate, at a time when Europe is experiencing catastrophic wild-fires & record-breaking heat. It's astonishing how low down the political agenda this remains in Britain, when all the environmental indicators are signalling disaster.
