Autocrats do not follow the "rule of law." Autocrats "rule by law." They use the law capriciously to reward their friends and punish their enemies. The do not allow the law to bind them and their cronies, they use the law as a cudgel to punish others. Authoritarian law doesn't protect, it punishes.

The idea that this just happened to the Broadview 6 — forcing grand juries to indict by cajoling them in an elevator, vouching to the grand jury, and telling "no" votes to leave if they don't want to indict — is nuts. It's probably happening everywhere. And it means the law as we know it is dead.

I've been a broken record on this for three years and I'll be a broken record for as long as that fucking website exists: X is a viciously racist far-right organising platform that ONLY WORKS because a huge number of centrists, lefties and progressivs cannot stop propping it up

Elon Musk accused of fuelling unrest after Belfast knife attack

The use of social media in planning violent protests over the Belfast knife attack has drawn condemnation, with Britain's ruling Labour Party accusing Elon Musk of stoking divisions. The tech billiona...

every time I say this, someone didn't know: you can get the NYRB, the New Yorker, the LRB, Paris Review, The Spectator (weirdly not New Statesman), The Week, both French & Italian Vogue & New Scientist among many many other magazines FREE via the Libby app from your local library?

Yep. The value of corporations rolling out the rainbow carpet isn't what's in their heart of hearts, it's the society-wide signaling of "acceptance is good, bigotry is bad." Even if entirely insincere, it tells society "we think the majority of our customers expect this," and that's good!

I mean no disrespect but I can't believe we're still pretending "corporations never cared about Pride" is an interesting thing to say. even during peak corp Pride I think you had to be exceptionally dim to not get what was going on lol like yeah I think I know Chipotle would kill me for a nickel

Every year for Pride, I repost Hue. I made him to send love and comfort to those who feel Pride isn’t for them because they aren’t out. You matter, you are valid, and it’s ok if you aren’t ready yet. Coming out is not a requirement for being part of this community. Happy Pride 🌈

A rainbow colored box turtle looking nervously out of a drab gray shell. There is text above him that says “It’s OK if you’re not ready yet.”

Don’t think too long about how debut-era Jimin, with his uncomfortably forced macho sex symbol persona, would feel about Arirang-era Jimin, with his entirely self-directed effervescent sex symbol status or you will cry

Today marks Nakba Day, an annual day of remembrance to commemorate the expulsion of more than 700,000 Palestinians between 1947 and 1949 during the creation of the State of Israel and the year that followed.   Inea is a New Yorker and a Nakba survivor. She shared her story with us.

Trans folks: as best you can, tune out the headlines, spend time with one another, build friendship and community. This wave is going to break: their political projects have never been less popular. Were gonna make it through this year and on the other side all our enemies will fall. Stay alive

Many people are aware of at least one good reason to avoid Hogwarts Legacy. Fewer are aware that it’s a retelling of the antisemitic “blood libel” myth. Yes, really. The game’s central antagonist is a greedy, hook-nosed “goblin” trying to kidnap children and use their blood for a magic ritual.

Warning! You might see posts in the wild claiming "Hogwarts Legacy is free right now!" but this is malware, if you try and run it, it'll install Hogwarts Legacy on your PC.
