Coming summer 2027: Jason Momoa and Jason Mantzoukas in a buddy comedy of 'Epic' proportions: Gilgamesh and Enkidu.

My primary goal for my next five years of reading will be to bring that 66% down to a less embarrassing 50% - and to try to make sure that, if I must read something by a pom or a seppo, it will at least not be written by a white person.
Since early 2014, I have read 439 books. Of those, ~289 - about two-thirds - were written by British or USian authors. Of that 66%, only 7% (~21 books) were written by people of colour. This makes me sad.

I like the alchemy at work in posts like this where someone takes a mid idea for a post (lead) and surrounds it with a meta-post, thus turning it into a good post overall (gold)
cop: did he send any texts around the time of the crash? cop 2: he sent a post that reads "padding my three track album with 26 skits and interludes" cop: not bad but it ain't going viral cop 2: posting isn't just about going viral cop: (sighs) not this shit again
Is it just me or is the jasmine in Melbourne flowering early this year?
Fascinating - Mesolithic hunter-gatherers were populating upland lakes with brown trout. There are some species in Ireland that may have been brought in too, eg a small, cuddly bear cub is easy to transport in a boat … and how did red deer get here in the end?
Read the original research in Antiquity 🆓 'The introduction of fish to the Scandinavian mountains by hunter-fisher-gatherers 5000 BC' - Axel Mjærum, Ellen K. Friis, Trygve Hesthagen & Andreas J. Kirchhefer doi.org/10.15184/aqy... 13/13 🧵
airbnb I’m staying at unintentionally created the toughest punk album cover of 2027
I'm seeing nostalgia for How I Met Your Mother creeping into the zeitgeist and I don't like it.
Time to offer this seminar again I see.
there are a lot of philosophical concepts that get egregiously misused out of the seminar room (and in the seminar room, to be fair). but in terms of sheer pernicious misuse "social construct" has gotta be top 5 somewhere and it's not number 5

We still have the cultural image that actual Nazis were defeated in the 1940's, and the remaining Nazis are either unemployed basement-dwellers or fringe militias in Idaho. There is still a reluctance by media and business leaders to say openly that the world's wealthiest person is a Nazi.
The ongoing Musk nazi tweets just have me wondering if corporate boards are even a thing anymore
Just realised the emergency warning test on everybody's phone is going to happen during my lecture 🙃
Gonna start explaining Northern Hemisphere animals with reference to Australian ones. You see, a "badger" (BA-jah) is like a cross between a wombat and a Tasmanian devil.
He would get in sooooooo much trouble from Hindu nationalists, it would probably be the last film he ever made... But maybe worth it?
I desperately want the Christopher Nolan film adaptation of the Ramayana. This is now on the table
What I don't get, even from an Evangelical perspective, is what's so intrinsically bad about lust? Like just feel the feeling and don't act upon it? Men will talk a big game about discipline and then act like sexual self-control is metaphysically impossible.
foolproof 👍
Worth adding some numbers to this. The British press decided to make trans rights into an issue. It just wasn’t an issue before. This was a top-down decision. shado-mag.com/articles/opi...
Every now and then, it’s worth saying what ought to be obvious: trans people have always existed, and will exist as long as humans do. They’ve not done anything wrong by wanting their existence recognised, supported, and celebrated. The transformation of their existence into “an issue” is evil.
it's sooo funny that the marvel movies eventually replicated the exact thing people disliked about the comics and preferred the movies for: overstuffed event crossovers that intimidate readers, demand you look at a whole bunch of other shit to know the story, and don't even tell a good story
Fun fact: While Jews made up less than 1% of the population of Argentina, they comprised up to 12% of those disappeared during the Dirty War, due to the antisemitism of the right-wing junta and the association of Jews with leftism. More Jews were killed in the Argentine Dirty War than on 10/7/2023.
Yes, Argentina, that country that has famously never dabbled in antisemitism, unlike Spain. Just don't ask the people in Javier Milei's government where all of their ancestors came from and why.
great news: birds are probably having fun up there
“Do Birds Enjoy Flying?” study suggests that birds do, in fact, seem to enjoy flying
The thing about JKR and telling folks not to buy Harry Potter shit is it isn't because we think it can take away her fortune and platform. She's so rich she would still be rich if she never sold another book It is because it is literally the smallest possible hurdle to clear to value trans lives
Two contrasting headlines from the ABC today. It is wrong to put antisemitism and Islamophobia into a hierarchy - they're both real and potent forces in our society. But we probably should distinguish between white people feeling anxious and sad and brown people getting bashed in the streets.
He perfected acting with CGI years before Ian McKellen was crying about it

Frankly, I'm gutted by this announcement. This is laying down a red carpet for Western chauvinists and white supremacists. I will be desperately searching for a new academic job next year, but I would never be able to bring myself to apply for one of these. www.unimelb.edu.au/newsroom/new...
