My primary goal for my next five years of reading will be to bring that 66% down to a less embarrassing 50% - and to try to make sure that, if I must read something by a pom or a seppo, it will at least not be written by a white person.

Since early 2014, I have read 439 books. Of those, ~289 - about two-thirds - were written by British or USian authors. Of that 66%, only 7% (~21 books) were written by people of colour. This makes me sad.

Fascinating - Mesolithic hunter-gatherers were populating upland lakes with brown trout. There are some species in Ireland that may have been brought in too, eg a small, cuddly bear cub is easy to transport in a boat … and how did red deer get here in the end?

Read the original research in Antiquity 🆓 'The introduction of fish to the Scandinavian mountains by hunter-fisher-gatherers 5000 BC' - Axel Mjærum, Ellen K. Friis, Trygve Hesthagen & Andreas J. Kirchhefer doi.org/10.15184/aqy... 13/13 🧵

it's sooo funny that the marvel movies eventually replicated the exact thing people disliked about the comics and preferred the movies for: overstuffed event crossovers that intimidate readers, demand you look at a whole bunch of other shit to know the story, and don't even tell a good story

Fun fact: While Jews made up less than 1% of the population of Argentina, they comprised up to 12% of those disappeared during the Dirty War, due to the antisemitism of the right-wing junta and the association of Jews with leftism. More Jews were killed in the Argentine Dirty War than on 10/7/2023.

Yes, Argentina, that country that has famously never dabbled in antisemitism, unlike Spain. Just don't ask the people in Javier Milei's government where all of their ancestors came from and why.

Tweet from Arsen Ostrovsky: "For those asking who I’m backing in the World Cup Final: Argentina! Easy choice. And not just because of Messi. One country has stood unequivocally with Israel. The other, Spain, is governed by a sewer of unrestrained antisemitism and appeasement of terror! Vamos, Argentina! 🇦🇷🇮🇱"

The thing about JKR and telling folks not to buy Harry Potter shit is it isn't because we think it can take away her fortune and platform. She's so rich she would still be rich if she never sold another book It is because it is literally the smallest possible hurdle to clear to value trans lives

Two contrasting headlines from the ABC today. It is wrong to put antisemitism and Islamophobia into a hierarchy - they're both real and potent forces in our society. But we probably should distinguish between white people feeling anxious and sad and brown people getting bashed in the streets.
