25 years ago, terrorists killed nearly 3,000 people, including 2,753 New Yorkers. As we remember that terrible day, let us also remember the first responders, office workers and strangers who ran toward danger to help each other.
This is so real. The shit people would say to my white mother was so heinous that she cut off multiple friendships within days of the attacks. A lot of people asking if my dad knew the hijackers or about The Plan. Oh, and my mom thought he’d died in the towers while being asked all of this.

The day after 9/11, family friends, who did not know, where at the house and openly talking about how all Arabs and Muslims in the US should be rounded up into camps. I was 12 years old. We were never united.
This afternoon, I joined Archbishop Elpidophoros and faith leaders at St. Nicholas National Shrine to mark the 25 years since the horrific terror attacks of 9/11 and reflect on the resilience of our city.
Twenty-five years later, September 11th is still asking something of us. The distance we've traveled from 2001 is not a reason for despair. It's the assignment. New column, on the anniversary. (Link below)
