just took the time to explain to an NC cannabis advocacy IG account that using a genAI song about being pro cannabis to support thwarting HB 328 is not only cringe as fuuuuuck but also a missed opportunity to collab with an actual person and leverage their fanbase toward their cause 🫩

NEW: I wrote for MSNBC about how Madison Square Garden turning off their facial recognition cameras for Taylor Swift is a perfect encapsulation of our dystopian present: where the wealthy can use surveillance to consolidate power, and the rest of us live in a privately owned panopticon.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got to buy MSG's privacy. Her fans aren't so lucky.

Reports that Madison Square Garden temporarily shut off its facial recognition system for Swift’s wedding expose a glaring problem with how the elite wield and control mass surveillance.

shouts out to people doing the mutual aid and not whining about people who are struggling and need help. shouts out to all my people who are poor and want to help. it’s a community effort, dawgs 💪

While world leaders are hell bent on ‘saving the kids’ by enabling mass censorship & surveillance measures like ID checks or kicking teens off of social media, we seldom hear what kids have to say about it, even though many of them are doing incredible things for accountability movements.

An Instagram post about Jeffrey Epstein’s ties to wealthy communities in Marin County, CA, turned one California student newspaper into a free-speech flash point. The students say they were just doing their homework.

Ironically, France's government did a study several years ago that found there was no safe or technically feasible way to mandate online age verification without massively expanding surveillance and eviscerating online privacy. They decided to do it anyway.

France just became the first nation in Europe to ban teens from social media and, you guessed it, they’re forcing everyone to upload their ID’s for social media access in order to enforce it. www.bbc.com/news/article...

Even to the extent that some platforms are pre-complying or rolling out age verification and ID checks in response to political pressure "well I just won't use it" is not a helpful response. Many, many people do not have that choice. They depend on certain platforms for community, work, etc.
