Hi. web dev at your local public library. learning about the space around me; web dev, maps, geospatial, cleveland. You may know me from other places on the internet. (website: https://skorasaur.us) he/him

If you are an anti-AI author, I am begging you to go to your local library’s board meeting and plead with them to not incorporate AI in their day-to-day operations. Because it’s happening and it’s gonna hurt staff, it’s gonna hurt the public, it’s gonna hurt every creative person it steals from.

traffic cameras are good but if advocates won’t engage with the notion that there are select groups who have used their proximity to power (cops and families of cops) to avoid being subjected to them the same standard as everyone else, they won’t get what they expect out of the solution

"Research databases are not preserved. There is no system in place in the UK (or anywhere else, so far as I know) to ensure that research outputs are officially preserved in perpetuity, as though they were books, when they are in the form of a database. " lukemckernan.com/2026/06/28/l...

Lost resources

To lose one database is a misfortune; to lose four feels like a conspiracy. Recently three online databases and one audiovisual digital archive with underlying database, on each of which I worked f…

(people would pay $10 more for a frying pan but they can't tell if the +$10 pan is really $10 better so they don't and companies stop producing them)

People want quality - what's missing is trustworthiness. It's just not rational to pay the premium for quality when the risk of not getting it is so high. Deregulation, regulatory capture, turnover etc have created a free-to-stab-you-in-the-back market where you can't trust anything anyone says. 🤷

Tfw you told your coworkers on monday you'll have the new feature ready for production on Wednesday and it's Friday & you're still stumped (but so close!) to having it ready.

Cleveland-based freelancer Saint Claire has returned from a hiatus to shed more light on Pastor Aaron Phillips, one of the more comically corrupt figures in Cleveland politics who, of course, is a paid consultant to Mayor Résumé. This dispatch is free for all. www.rooster.info/p/aaron-phil...

Why is an ordained huckster advocating for mass surveillance in Cleveland?

Pastor Aaron Phillips and Mayor Justin Bibb have found common cause in Flock, a problematic and ineffective company routinely abused by police.

As the one responsible for all tech in a state library/archive that's about the size & with the same remit as some national libraries, let me amplify: libraries need more funding. Tell your politicians & administrators. We are getting crushed by the fact that "digital" is more expensive than books.

Good news, but the fact that this is only happening now, nearly three years after the cyber attack shows 1) what a huge job BL staff have had rebuilding services, 2) that the BL is underfunded, and 3) the impact this has had on academic research, especially in the humanities.

There wouldn’t be a Summer Game map without Open Street Map! We’re happy to support this outstanding open system, which allows us to rapidly develop map interfaces without relying on corporate platforms that invisibly compromise our patron’s privacy.

A question I get from students a lot that I'm not sure I can answer: Is there a place where people are discussing building sustainable/public interest/civic projects? As in talking about the challenges they face/sharing tips/recommendations, promoting their work to others to get extra eyes on WIP?

Y'all are gonna be real upset when you got drones circling your neighborhood all day and you don't know if it's delivering a burrito, taking pretty pictures, entertaining teen FPV enthusiasts, peeping on your children, snitching to the cops, or exploding a gas station.

“Besides working with DoorDash in select regions of Virginia, North Carolina and Texas, Wing, Alphabet's drone delivery subsidiary, also recently expanded its agreement to make deliveries for Walmart.”
