My article on Yoasobi’s “Idol” is now on Music Theory Online! It considers the role of genre-topics in narrating this song, the opening theme for the 1st season of anime Oshi no ko. Rap, trap, singer-songwriter style, J-pop otaku, and Eurobeat combine to tell the tragic, unknowable story of Ai.

The undiminished, deep affection for #Metallica’s late bassist Cliff Burton reveals a lot about the strength of fanhood in the implacable face of tragedy, says Joel McIver on the 40th anniversary of his death Living And Dying, Laughing And Crying: the Legacy of Cliff Burton buff.ly/EGRd3ix

I think it's really interesting how the Fleetwood Mac revival has led to this weird retconning of the complaint about their music being that it was too hip and obscure instead of too smooth, polished, safe and adult oriented

I am incredibly thrilled and humbled to announce that I will be playing rhythm guitar for Elisa C Martin's performance at Mad With Power next year, playing her stunning classic album "The Gates of Oblivion" from her time in Dark Moor in full. Words cannot express what this opportunity means to me

sending my best to the Xrd community on what I can only imagine is a deeply wounding loss. I didn't know sweetxjam but I could sense how loved he was even from afar. wishing you all well.

still sorta suck at recording these. need to figure some way to improve the tone coming through the audio interface. also my left hand is obscured lol. anyway, here's a scale. been adjusting the way I weave economy picking into into runs like this.

🎂🎂🎂Happy 27th Birthday, Dreamcast!🎂🎂🎂 I'll never forget the depth of your game library and how wonderfully diverse and creative your peripherals were

An illustration of Sonic holding the Dreamcast Twin Sticks next to Ulala from Space Channel 5 Part 2 holding a Dreamcast controller with a Seaman microphone, with Beat from Jet Grind Radio behind them holding a fishing controller. They are all intertwined by the cords of their peripherals, while behind them is a giant Dreamcast glowing gently over them. In the background are floating Chao, Light Chao, and Dark Chao, Amigo from Samba de Amigo, and a Chu Chu and Kapu Kapu. Also Seaman looking upset at Ulala, maybe Ulala said some crass words that he didn't enjoy

it's not weird at all to think any computer/AI that demonstrates the same level of reasoning and intentionality as a human should be treated as a person. we just have not seen anything even close to close to close to close to that yet. all we've seen is fancy pattern recognition.

The idea that we are fundamentally averse to the idea that machines can think is BS. Human beings are actually very much inclined to believe machines can think. Our sci-fi sense of wonder is being exploited by charlatans. We do not accept PR and propaganda that are wholly unsupported by the facts.
