With animation, not only do you have to understand movement and physics, but you have to interpret movement. How personality and mood and thought manifests physically in ways you can read. What is the rhythm of a type of person. It's part actor, part choreographer, part body language analysis.

I've been thinking a lot about visible vs invisible skill layers. i.e every craft has outer layers of skills that laypeople can recognise, and inner layers that you need expertise and experience to perceive at all. Treat environment art, vfx, props the way you would treat a character. Always ask questions what purpose they serve in the moment and think about how they all fit together.
