Honestly my experience on this site is that at least one of people cutesy teehee gimmick has some allegations, and it's people with rent-lowering gimmicks like being into vore, fattening people and giant women crushing cities are some of the actually-nicest people on this platform.

I really don't think "spreadsheet people" was meant as an insult and it's really unbecoming to be this mad about it. And Ben is also basically correct; a lot of people only see the negative externalities of AI because it's not delivering anything in particular to them directly.

WHAT IS CYBERNETICS?
1 HAVE BEEN occUPIED for many years with problems of com-
munication engineering. These have led to the design and
investigation of various sorts of communication machines,
some of which have shown an uncanny ability to simulate
human behavior, and thereby to throw light on the possible
nature of human behavior. They have even shown the exist-
ence of a tremendous possibility of replacing human be-
havior, in many cases in which the human being is relatively
slow and ineffective. We are thus in an immediate need of
discussing the powers of these machines as they impinge on
the human being, and the consequences of this new and
fundamental revolution in technique.
To those of us who are engaged in constructive research
and in invention, there is a serious moral risk of aggrandizing
what we have accomplished. To the public, there is an
equally serious moral risk of supposing that in stating new
potentials of fact, we scientists and engineers are thereby
justifying and even urging their exploitation at any costs.
It will therefore be taken for granted by many that the at-
titude of an investigator who is aware of the great new pos-
sibilities of the machine age, when employed for the purpose
of communication and control, will be to urge the prompt
exploitation of this new "know-how" for the sake of the
machine and for the minimization of the human element in
life. This is most emphatically not the purpose of the present
book.
