The debate came amid growing concern over the impact of recent Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) guidance and what many delegates described as a broader political attack on trans rights and equality protections. Speakers warned that if the EHRC's proposals become embedded in law, the consequences for trans and gender diverse workers across local government could be profound. "If this guidance is allowed to harden into law, the consequences for our members will be severe," delegates heard. The impact of the draft guidance is already being felt by trans workers. "We're already seeing issues on whether trans people can safely access facilities they've been using for years, without any issue," one speaker said. "It means having to out yourself every time you need to use the loo. It means fear. Work is already difficult enough. Like us, they face high workloads, poor pay and stress. But now they're being politically targeted in the workplace."UNISON The conference heard repeated arguments that the debate extends far beyond questions of facilities and access. "These attacks are never really about toilets, are they?" said one speaker. "They are about policing bodies. They're about rolling back equality rights!" Delegates warned that any weakening of protections for trans people would ultimately threaten rights for wider groups of workers. Several speakers delivered fierce criticisms of the EHRC guidance itself, describing it as an unprecedented rollback of rights. One delegate characterised the proposals as "institutionalised transphobia across public institutions", highlighting that they would exclude trans women from spaces and services available to others, while legitimising intrusive questioning about a person's sex. "We are more than our bodies. Cis women aren't defined by their wombs any more than anybody else, or by their ability to give birth.!" The speaker argued that the issue formed part of a wider assault on equality protections. "This attack isn't really an attack on our sexual identity. It's part of a wider war. It's an attack on all our equalities. As a cis woman, my rights aren't undermined by my trans colleagues. They're undermined by the politicians who closed down the nurseries, by the bosses who maintain the gender pay gap, and by the far-right bigots who try to divide us.!" The debate concluded with a call for employers to move beyond minimum legal compliance and actively defend trans, non-binary and gender diverse workers. "Transgender Members Following the UK Supreme Court's decision in For Women Scotland Ltd v Scottish Ministers and the subsequent Certification Officer decision in Flaherty v UNISON the union has reviewed the eligibility requirements for positions reserved for women. Members are advised that eligibility for seats reserved for women under the Equality Act 2010 is determined by biological sex. For these purposes, "biological sex" means sex at birth and a reserved women's seat is open only to members who are biologically female. This clarification is intended to ensure that the union's election processes are conducted in accordance with current legal requirements and applicable union rules."

The piece reveals exactly how biased the systems are against trans-related healthcate. Well researched evidence demonstrating real issues, simply ignored. One "GC" journalist blog expressing "concerns", no evidence of any actual harm, shuts down vital aspects of care. That's the scandal right there.

NHS cancelling surgeries for adults even after they’ve already paid for travel + accommodation and waited years to get there. Some were about to be wheeled into theatre! Every manager responsible for this decision must be sacked and every patient paid compensation.

Ball @deanwball x.com The main thing I have to say to the young generation of Americans is that your grandparents and great-grandparents committed a kind of accounting fraud when they ran our country a century ago with social security, and at the time it was a reasonable affordance to grant our leaders, who were dealing with an economic depression and a world war, but nonetheless they did commit the fraud, and they ended up buying all sorts of extravagant things using the fraudulent gains, including what became the thing we now understand to be the high-modern technocratic nation-state, and that is glorious and also bad and all that, but the thing is there's still the issue about the accounting fraud, whose debt is coming due and is coming due fast. It is best to consider this with as minimal residue of sentiment as possible, to really sit with it, to stare it coldly in the face. Unwinding the great fraud of the high modernists is your job, whether you wish it to be or not.

You gotta zoom out and see the big picture. The UK media does this same play all the time. They’ve hounded people to suicide or fleeing the country; they whip up moral panics; they constantly spread racism and bigotry. But Arday does not have to be innocent in order for their actions to be wrong

I do think the water thing with AI gets overplayed compared to the technology's other environmental and social harms, but AI boosters like to pretend it's entirely invented. The potable water industry in the UK - no tree huggers here - makes it clear than no, this is a very real issue.
