I don't like to be a conspiracy theorist, but I do wonder whether part of the AI push is the tech oligarch class deliberately accelerating climate change. Every time we reduce emissions, they invent some new thing that needs *even more* power that *has* to come from fossil fuels.

Don’t tell me autism didn’t exist in Ancient Greece and Rome, someone had to remember every line of the Iliad and it sure wasn’t Pliny the Neurotypical
I could remember all the basic trigonometry functions, but instead, I remember every lyric to sugar ray’s “fly”
It is the most wonderful day of the year (reduced-to-clear Halloween mini-candies in stores)
Literally just a DDoS attack on the concept of anything good existing.
Shot, shot, shot, chaser
The thing I love about this scene is that at the time it looks like he's seizing on an excuse to get out of an awkward party, only later in the episode do you realise that no, he actually is a horse nerd.
one of my favorite moments of TNG is when Picard is immediately unable to contain his horse autism
"Anthopomorphic version of the thing that eats the thing" is always a disturbing genre of product mascot but I think this ginger chew packaging takes it to a whole new level. Look at this Jabba the Hutt-ass bastard. He knows he's a cannibal and he loves it.
Going into Starbucks wearing a featureless mask in order to see the non-personalised menu, the IRL equivalent of visiting a website in incognito mode.
Starbucks CEO says the company is planning to focus more on AI and tech, including a adding system that would recognize customers as they arrive in stores to "present personalized digital menus."

I don't normally get broken up about celebrity deaths but Patrick Stewart's has hit me hard. Watching Star Trek: TNG every week was such a big part of my childhood.
The starkest thing about TNG compared to most space opera today is how much it presents the eruption of violence as a total catastrophe, rather than something awesome bsky.app/profile/norm...
Same. There was something that felt really radical about having a TV hero whose superpower was not just intelligence but thoughtfulness, and a kind of moral seriousness. Who showed from that first episode that you “win” by seeking to understand what seems like a threat.

Quote tweet this with your favourite Patrick Stewart performance that isn't Star Trek or X-Men.
Amazing how powerful acting can be that millions of people's first inspirations about what it means to be an effective, humane and ethical leader came from a middle-aged British guy shouting on a fake ship in the middle of a soundstage. 86 years. May we all live and prosper for that long.
re: a twitter post speculating "space opera faction with the common stahlhelm+red goggles natzee-coded aesthetic, but they're actually a fairly reasonable center-leftist democracy" Would take a lot of work to clarify, no, their mission statements actually *aren't* euphemisms for atrocities.
Hasbro execs: I sure hope the people who make Dungeons and Dragons don't get any ideas about working as a team, gradually getting more powerful, and eventually standing up to bosses.
Responding to union concerns, Hasbro CEO says "the greatest form of job protection any team can have is to expand the business they're working on"
🧵This Molyneux quote has filled me with existential dread ever since I read it. It reminds me of one of my favorite collaborative moments working with @threeohfour.bsky.social. We were about 1/3 through Unavowed production. I asked him if he could animate some kind of idle animation for Eli.
One of the things I miss about working at a games studio was regularly working with concept artists. Every single time, they'd come up with something that met my needs but looked better than what was in my head.
Prediction is hard. Especially about the future. That Yogi Berra gem proves that you don't have to be a sf writer to get irritated with people insisting that you must know what's going to happen tomorrow, but (as a sf writer), I can tell you that this is one of our main occupational hazards.
I didn't enter a game into this year's IFComp, but the two games I helped playtest ended up in 1st and 2nd place. Am I some kind of...secret IFComp kingmaker? ifcomp.org/comp/2026

So I've been re-reading and thinking about the 1950s Dan Dare comics, and I've decided to start a very nerdy blog where I write commentaries/analyses of the stories... write.as/dandare/ #DanDare

True story: I was confused by Lovecraft's descriptions of alien architecture until I learned that "cyclopean" meant "huge, as if built by giants" and not "having one eye"
Lovecraft: It was indescribable Me: OK Lovecraft: I shall proceed to describe it, using a lot of words ending in “-ness” and “-ish” Me: Fine Lovecraft: I don’t know what cyclopean means Maybe it’s not indescribable maybe you just suck at writing
