Disability trans and queer stuff. Impatient crip/"bad vibes" They/them

It's about time this got discussed. I'll admit part of what makes it so attractive a prospect is that when there is, genuinely, a real threat, it's very easy to spread panic about it in ways that are neither helpful nor accurate. And that when people DO this, it actually makes the threat worse!

Recently, I did a wonderful interview with the indefatigable @emilystjams.bsky.social about trans people's online information environment and why there are very strong incentives to spread panic. It was a wide-ranging discussion that I think is more relevant than ever.

BAY AREA: On 9/9/16, incarcerated workers & supporters across 27 states organized a strike—likely the largest prison strike in U.S. history! Join EBDSA for a 10th anniversary retrospective, ft. documentary footage & a panel of inside & outside strike organizers. tinyurl/16strike

Background image of barbed wire gradually transforming into flying birds. Title says "10th Anniversary Retrospective of the 2016 National Prison Strike". Beneath this in smaller letters it says "RSVP:tinyurl.com/16strike"

Information underneath says: "Documentary screening & panel discussion featuring inside/outside organizers, Uhuru Rowe, (Incarcerated Womxn's Clemency & Support Project) and Brooke Oakland (Abolition & Solidarity.)"

Beneath that it says "Sept 9th, 7-8:30 p.m., 1610 Harrison St Suite D. Moderated by Jo Morrison, EBDSA Stop Cop Nation."

In the very top left corner we see the East Bay Democratic Socialist of America logo, two hands clasping in front of a stylized tree.

I did not know that 'brands', and I use this term loosely here (more like drop shipped tat) approach people they think are influencers like unicorn hunters. Literally "we really like your vibe" haha

Sponsored running charity led by ruthlessly ambitious social worker agrees not to mention austerity or neoliberalism to maintain invites in Westminster.

I kid you not, our paper on spatial apartheid was reviewed by apartheid itself. Literally, the (extremely famous) journal sent it to white South African reviewers who pointed out all these "papers" written by white South Africans DURING apartheid, that we failed to cite.

More often it comes in the form of anonymous reviewers saying a topic does not matter; of journal editors saying Black thought is outside of scope; of people on hiring committees questioning the rigor of Black Studies (broadly defined) as a disciplinary approach.

Do not speak to the BBC if you are trans. Just don't do it. Tell them to go fuck themselves. Even if you know the reporter and they are not an ass, tell them to go fuck themselves anyway because they work for the BBC and their editors will do this regardless of the journalist's intent.

More appalling behaviour from the BBC. ⬇️ A trans person interviewed about their horrific experience having their surgery cancelled whilst in the hospital described as 'biologically female'. And then half the article devoted to praising the work of an unemployed transphobe. 🗣️ DEFUND THE BBC 🗣️

Dr Beth Upton, a universally beloved professional (except for the one bigot!) that dedicated her life to helping others, who did nothing wrong, quit her job and fled halfway around the world, and the UK media did not stop. They tracked her to New Zealand and continued their harassment and abuse

For those unfamiliar with how dangerous the UK media is, Dr Beth Upton, a NHS doctor that had the temerity of living as a trans woman, was hounded by the UK media after a (coincidentally vicious, racist, hateful bigot hated by all her coworkers) sued the NHS. Dr Beth Upton had to flee the country

You gotta zoom out and see the big picture. The UK media does this same play all the time. They’ve hounded people to suicide or fleeing the country; they whip up moral panics; they constantly spread racism and bigotry. But Arday does not have to be innocent in order for their actions to be wrong

This is not gatekeeping activism (sorry but there has been a LOT of discourse). This is don't replicate work, don't ignore relevant theory, and don't further splinter off where there could be huge opportunities to work together and be stronger.

At some point we’re also going to need to talk about how Arday’s merely claiming to be autistic and yet having a storied academic career is in itself sufficient for some quarters to have cast him as guilty of lies and deceit

And, AND, it needs to be REALLY FUCKING CLEAR that whatever Cofnas’s role in this and his explicit self description as a white supremacist racist, this was a public lynching of a Black autistic academic perpetrated by multiple actors and institutions acting in concert, whether intended or not

Jason Arday didn’t deserve this. The lie that this is about truth or academic standards is bullshit. The Cass report is based on the transphobic “research” which has since been found to be unethical and based in academic misconduct. That has barely been reported. It’s racism. He was targeted.
