Starting to use @grain.social more frequently and I really like it but, and I'm not sure why, it seems to not respect my exif metadata at all. . . I added my camera make and model to see if it showed up on the site but it seems all the exif metadata got wiped

hard pill to swallow for atproto developers/creators: 99% of potential users either do not care about, value, understand, or want to “own their own data” i see so many apps/projects lead with this “value prop”, but it’s not an important or meaningful consideration for most people

People do care about their data; they happen to not use the same language that tech folks use when they're talking about. And frankly, we as tech folks fucked up by fighting for React and JavaScript everywhere (dev happiness) over privacy and safety (user integrity). It's our fault.

Especially when it comes to Black people, we KNOW that our information is never going to be handled well or safely by those who don't have our concerns in mind. This book shows what happens when it's not in our hands (aka IBM and policing, ATL and surveillance, etc etc).
