So disappointing. And exhausting to have to have the BS detector running all the time…
Linked to article is lying about stories. I assume AI - maybe human. The project reported on (and linked to) is *cranberries* (not blue). The ‘sweeter’ berries claim is made up. The reference linked to with claims of testing is a solar project database site. Nothing related to fruit testing.

I knew about Lovelock from the “Gaia Hypothesis” he conceived in the 1970s with evolutionary biologist Lynn Margulis but his instrumentation and atmospheric chemistry work was totally new
In June 1966, scientist James Lovelock warned Shell in a confidential memo of “the almost certain fact that the climate is worsening and the probability that the combustion of fuel is responsible.” Shell would later become "a founding member of the denialist Global Climate Coalition." 😑
Wolbochia folks, I had no idea that Google was in the sterile male vector business, but seems like this should be at least as effective as radiation induced sterility, no?
Tech giant Google is seeking government approval to release 32 million mosquitoes into #Florida — and the proposal has sparked strong reactions from thousands online. www.clickorlando.com/news/local/2...
“The authors note that modern shipping has long been recognized as one of the primary pathways for marine invasive species, but the scale and duration of the recent vessel lay-up is unlike anything previously documented, creating an unprecedented global biosecurity challenge.”
Scientists warn that ships stranded for months in the Strait of Hormuz have accumulated unusually large amounts of marine life on their hulls. When they return to service, they could transport invasive species to ports around the world. www.whoi.edu/press-room/n... @whoi.edu @unep.org
Excellent visualization of the carbon cycle pre-industrialization thru 2017, great addition to intro bio or plant diversity class
Here it's on YouTube (now realizing I could've posted that here..) @rarohde.bsky.social mentioned before he might publish an update with additional years of data. youtu.be/dwVsD9CiokY
I am thrilled to share that the biology dept at Hamilton College is hiring a TT Evolutionary Ecologist to start in fall of 2027! This position would teach an upper level Evolution lect/lab, a section of Bio-100, rotate through our 200-level Eco/Evo course, and a seminar. apply.interfolio.com/190184

This is a pretty amazing paper! The cellular detail on the moss and Cyanobacteria are truly stunning.

In addition to disrupting the lives and dreams of great students from around the world, this will degrade the economic, technological, and national security of the United States.

Fun thread! And the link here has lots of good advice for practicing scientists even though it’s written for journalists
I stand by those words 13 years later. To scientists, I say: it is NOT hopeless! You can learn to harness the powers that everyday language. But it will take some practice, and it will take more than a thousand words. Here are some further suggestions: carlzimmer.com/science-writ... 10/10

My 92 year old mother in law returned from the grocery store with these, saying they were BOGO and the orange cream flavor sounded tastier than any of the Ensure flavors
I’m late to the party but this is such a cool paper. Most mosses have several archegonia that each make an egg, but typically only one forms a sporophyte even though it seems like multiple eggs could be fertilized. This points to a possible mechanism to suppress the growth of all but one offspring
Happy to announce our study that has just been published from work done during my PhD at the University of Bristol working in Prof. Jill Harrison's lab. It's about WOX genes and sporophyte development in the model moss, Physcomitrium patens. Take a look 🧵👇
No models. No satellites. Just 50 years of Burgundy harvest dates: ~4.1 days earlier every decade. Climate change, written on a cellar wall. 🍷 🇫🇷 🧫
For this new OMB rule I had mostly been thinking of "grants" in the science and arts sense but as OMB defines it I gather also includes a lot of what until now has been considered routine transportation, education, and healthcare transfers to to state and local government.
I don’t think people really understand how bad the OMB proposed rule is going to be for state and local govt. We’re talking about putting a full third of state budgets under the explicit control of Russ Vought. (1/2) www.bondbuyer.com/news/cities-...
