The Termite Terrace team that produced the peak Warner Brothers cartoons (some time after A Wild Hare) was one of the greatest examples of multi-disciplinary working In history. I will not be taking questions at this time.

The "canonical" debut of Bugs Bunny was released on this day in 1940, the Tex Avery short A Wild Hare. There are a couple sorta-Bugs-Bunny cartoons before this one, but it's fair to view this as his first. Happy 86th birthday, Bugs.

This is really good.and captures the elusive weirdness of the statue really well - I couldn't make it up for staircase when I visited and definitely couldn't now. As it says several times, you can't really see it when you're close up. You just get impressions.

But I'm getting ahead of myself, so let me give Elrod a chance to say what he means by "the dirtbags won't save us" while I dig my own tracksuit out of storage: What I see in dirtbagism is a left-of-center version of the right's war on empathy. It's a mode of politics that is intentionally cruel. It takes pleasure in derision and humiliation for their own sakes. It's essentially a "fuck your feelings" politics of the left. Here's the thing: I myself do not take pleasure in derision or humiliation. I am, as my dad used to tell me on those days when I just couldn't stop crying, a gentle soul. He'd say that with a smile on his face that belied how much my sadness made him want to cry, because he was a gentle soul, too. I come from delicate stock. At thirty-four, I must reckon with the problematic reality that I have pasture-raised my heart like veal, coddling it and overfeeding it to keep it tender. And as veal might say if it could talk before being slaughtered, I don't know that I've ultimately benefited from all that coddling. I don't even like seeing my enemies derided or humiliated all that much - I'm only ever relieved that I don't have to helm the cruelty myself. Elrod might call this a fine quality. I'm not so sure. Is it a fine quality if it mostly shows up in the cringing, eye-averting behaviors of cowardice?
