He's also worried about turning 40 - after 43 years hard service in this magnificent series

Some Came Running (1958). I had high hopes for this first watch, and the opening sequence grabbed me by the neck: a mystery man on a Greyhound bus, going somewhere, big bright yellow Metrocolor titles, and an absolute juggernaut of an Elmer Bernstein score. That first two minutes is the business

It's weird reading John L Williams' (v good) Heatwave, about the summer of 1976, and seeing temperatures over 32 described as so extreme that people lost their minds. At least it seems they invented road-building material that doesn't melt. And we don't have a ladybird plague.
