Like. We have to start from, we all understand that Nazis are bad. But does the average indoctrinated American citizen understand that the US is too? From my experience - no. I’ve discussed this topic & argued OP’s point for years online & IRL. A common response is incredulousness or rejection.

Every now and again I think it's important to recommend this book. It drives home the understanding that we live in a connected eco-system and that evil doesn't simply manifest in a vacuum. Nazi Germany studied American fascism, particularly Jim Crow, very closely before committing the Holocaust.

Book cover:
Hitler's American Model

The United States and the Making of Nazi Race Law

i would say this is the core of the problem. We don't take anti-Black and anti-Native violence seriously, when the literal Nazis did. They took Andrew Jackson's notes so seriously that Hitler wrote about admiring the Trail of Tears and reservation systems- reducing the KKK to being "silly"

Yeah, but the KKK have long been viewed as marginal, clownish peckerwood halfwits by most everyone. They don’t scan as radical racists who hold broad national institutional power. I don’t know who the archetype for that in the U.S. is. Woodrow Wilson?

Perpetually linking ICE activity to mid 20th century Nazism misses over a hundred years of US immigration law based on racial exclusion AND the very real policies of US empire both domestic and abroad. The US held Haitian asylum seekers in detention camps in Cuba for years as recently as the 90s.

When you pass the buck of American imperialism to the German Nazis, you don't just draw attention to how bad the US has become, you exonerate both the Nazis and the historic imperialists/authoritarians of your own country, since the former were inspired by the latter.

We rightfully talk about Ruby Bridges being the first Black child to integrate an all-white school in the South at 6-years-old. But we don’t talk nearly enough about Lucille Bridges, her mom ✨

Lockdown people are so funny. They pull out their hair at the fact that schools were closed for five minutes, and then you ask them if they actually want to educate poor and minority children and they’re like of course not

It established yet another line over which the settlers would supposedly not expand. Inevitably settlers did continue past this line, breaking another of their own agreements and leading to further resistance and another confederacy of Native resistance under Tecumseh in 1810.

Am told at the blue ash Ohio ICE office today that a bunch of springfield Haitians were told to just “check in” at are now having ankle monitors put on them, which, uh….. they’re not supposed to be fucking doing that

If the strike happens, I hope other authors will be prepared to support the workers. The librarians, yes, but also the people who work the counter. The people who clean the buildings. The people who deliver books across the city from branch to branch.
