Just found my great grandfather's nearly 100 old thesis at our summer cottage. Rolf was an entomologist, and the title translated to "ON THE ECOLOGY AND DISTRIBUTION OF ARTHROPODS IN THE DRIFT SAND AREAS ALONG THE COASTS OF FINLAND".

Senior Scientist at VTT Finland. I work with yeast and beer.
Finally, after 8.5 years, this massive new farmhouse yeast paper is out! We've analyzed no less than 1760 yeast samples, and discovered that there is more farmhouse yeast than all known modern beer yeast put together. New results about contamination, too. www.garshol.priv.no/blog/440.html

In our recent study, we created over 1000 intraspecific yeast hybrids by crossing genetically diverse strains and tested how well they grow under harsh industrial conditions such as high ethanol, salt, and organic acids. enviromicro-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
Influence of Ploidy and Genetic Background on Stress Tolerance of Intraspecific Yeast Hybrids
A large set of intraspecific yeast hybrids was constructed using two strategies that yielded series of hybrids with variable ploidy. Phenotyping of the hybrids was carried out in high-stress media to....

✨ Latest exciting story of the group in @nature.com. Here, we go beyond SNPs and built a species-wide atlas of genetic variants in yeast. With >1,000 near T2T genomes, we show how large genomic variations affect trait diversity. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

New preprint from the lab: we show that the ability to switch mating type was lost at least 13 times independently in the evolution of S. cerevisiae. At least 27% of isolates are heterothallic with a strong association with polyploidy and heterozygosity www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
Repeated losses of self-fertility shaped heterozygosity and polyploidy in yeast evolution
Evolutionary transitions in mating strategy have profound consequences for genetic variation and adaptation. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, mating-type switching is a central feature of the life cycle t...

Really excited to see this one out! I was involved in this joint study with @briangibsontub.bsky.social, Nubia G-V, Mathias H, helping with sequencing and genomics. We characterize strains isolated from Ecuadorian maize chicha, and found many diastatic strains carrying STA1! doi.org/10.1016/j.fm...

Has anyone ever notice peptone brand would influence antibiotic resistance in #yeast? We suddenly started having issues with our transformations with NAT and HYG selection (no colonies appearing with plasmids that have worked well before).
