Irish, supporter of democracy 😀

Delighted to say that, after a period away, I am writing again for @financialtimes.com. In tomorrow’s print edition is a long piece on Elon Musk’s and Mark Zuckerberg’s regulatory strategies. And why recent events show that X and Meta are weak, not strong, when faced with determined state action.

All 7 trillion $tech companies are 🇺🇸, but not all started that way. “The global race to build artificial general intelligence was initiated by a London-based start-up, DeepMind, founded in 2010 — well before Anthropic or OpenAI existed. How did Europe lose its lead? www.ft.com/content/e3e2...

Can Europe build its first trillion-dollar start-up?

The continent has yet to create a tech company to rival Alphabet, Amazon or Apple. Ian Hogarth explains why this matters — and how to set it right

No, Nigel Farage. We emphatically do not talk about this at home. You will not import your authoritarian christofascist Trump-style threats into our political debate. Can’t tell you quite how far you’ll be told to fuck off if you try.

Nigel Farage suggests MOs should debate rolling back abortion limit.

Reform UK leader says it would be ‘worthy’ discussion and parliament should get more time ‘to debate things people talk about at home’.

Am horrified by events in Georgia. Govt has abandoned all pretense of democracy. Many of my friends and former associates fighting for their freedom and futures, on the line, right now. 🇬🇪 🇪🇺✊👊https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2024/11/29/europe/georgia-protests-eu-membership-talks-suspended-intl

Georgia rocked by fierce protests after government puts EU hopes on ice | CNN

Georgia has been rocked by protests after its increasingly autocratic government said it would halt the former Soviet country’s bid to join the European Union.

“Whatever case you could make for Britain being out of the EU in the Obama era of 2016 makes no sense now” To be fair, it made very little sense then too. But, because of the menace of Trump 2 and a more dangerous world 8yrs later, this is painfully and acutely true now. bsky.app/profile/jona...

In the age of Trump, Brexit makes less sense than ever. Latest column www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Someone needs to tell these billionaires vying for power… They can turn their billions into trillions But they’ll never fix that gaping hole in their pre-formed little brains Or plug that gap left by whatever childhood trauma that turned them into the soulless f*ckwits that they are.

BREAKING: Assisted dying bill passes its second reading by 330 votes to 275, after emotional four-and-a-half hour debate, meaning it now proceeds to its next Commons stage. Keir Starmer spotted by MPs going through the ‘aye’ lobby.

234 Labour MPs voted FOR incl Keir Starmer, Rachel Reeves, Yvette Cooper, Ed Miliband, Lisa Nandy, Pat McFadden, Heidi Alexander, Hilary Benn, Alan Campbell, John Healey, Liz Kendall, Peter Kyle, Lucy Powell, Steve Reed, Jo Stevens

I dislike Reform intensely but I wouldn’t snigger too much at them - I find it entirely plausible that they will end up in government, either by merging with the Bad Enoch project or swallowing the Tory vote whole. We need to offer the disillusioned something more appealing. It isn’t electric cars.

I officially have more followers on Bluesky than the other site so let me re-introduce myself: I'm Mike Nellis, I'm a former Senior Advisor to Kamala Harris. I've spent two decades working in Democratic politics, fighting MAGA, and I'm not stopping now. Can you RT and follow to help reach others?

Well, that didn't take long. Elon Musk Is Pissing Off Everyone on Trump’s Team "...taking lots of credit for the president’s victory. Bragging about America PAC and X...trying to make President Trump feel indebted to him. And the president is indebted to no one" newrepublic.com/post/188501/...

Elon Musk Is Pissing Off Everyone on Trump’s Team

“He wants to be seen as having say in everything (even if he doesn’t),” one person in Trump’s orbit said.

This implies a passivity/innocence to Musk and Twitter that is simply not the truth. Twitter helped determine the US election not because it was “so influential” but because Musk abused the platform to misinform, spread conspiracy theories and weaponise hatred… to buy himself power. Very much not ok

Dan Hodges posts on Twitter:
“The madness of the self styled progressive Left. “This platform is so influential it just helped determine the US election. So we’re leaving it.”…”
