"What" It's the beginning of a sentence. "What glory we have heard of the spear danes! Folk kings of old!" "Hwæt" is improperly rendered as an exclamation, but "Hwæt" is not an interjection in old English. If the Beowulf poet mean "ecce!" he would have written "efne nū."
