It’s a field of design where the goal is to specifically and explicitly add friction to an experience.
The smartest designer I know has said that game design is one of the only fields where we purposely try to create problems for our users.
If your antagonist doesn't haunt the narrative and sing a different, kickass song to the protagonist each time they make an appearance, then they aren't living up to their fullest potential

Donkey Kong Country 2's map design is exceptionally elegant in that it uses each of the game's 13 level themes exactly thrice each, without using any of them more than twice in a row. This is accomplished via several clever uses of the environment.
