Students, I like semi-colons. I like em-dashes. I like all sorts of punctuation. But if you're going to use 'fancy' punctuation in assignments, learn how to use it properly. Otherwise, just stick to commas* and full-stops. *Make sure you learn a few things about using commas too.

On this day in 1701, the Great Peace of Montreal was signed between New France & the chiefs of several Indigenous "nations" (New France's words), ending the Beaver Wars. Sharma in Home Rule (2020) argues, "claims to indigenous nationhood comprise a form of presentism... [wrongly] read back..."

Like Loebs? Every fall semester, I like to remind people that while Perseus has many free Loebs sectioned up into book and chapter, if you want to download and read the public domain Loebs (277 of them) as PDFs or txt files, Duke U's very own Ryan Baumann created _Loebolus 📗📕_. ryanfb.xyz/loebolus/

EC Comics & Ray Bradbury: There Will Come Soft Rains!
EC Comics featured many stories by Ray Bradbury, and we’d like to share them with you. We discovered Ray Bradbury back in the sixth grade and subsequently read almost everything he ever wrote. So, …

The SCREEN Act is not just another age-verification bill — it goes much further than anything passed at the state-level or in other countries. 1. The bill doesn't just target porn sites. It goes after *any* site that allows material "harmful" to minors. You'd have to scan your face to use Google.

After losing her job at WaPo and the class she taught at Columbia, @karenattiah.bsky.social chose to go independent, launching “Resistance Studies Series” in 2025. On the Freelance Journalism Podcast, she shares the freedoms that come with her “warrior philosopher” lifestyle: youtu.be/GOfShyeignQ
Today, August 4, 2026, is the setting of Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” about a fully automated house continuing on after the family who lived there and the world around it died in a nuclear blast.
If you’re teaching #Greek, #palaeography, #manuscripts, #textcriticsm etc. this coming year, consider adding my website to your course assignments or resources. It’s free, I don’t collect/sell your info, and it’d be nearly impossible to cheat with AI. See 🧵 for details
My (free) website for learning to read from Greek manuscripts is available. Still some tweaks to be made but it’s ready with 12 lessons, tips and hints, downloadable reports if you use it for a class, and links to lots of resources. Please share and give feedback! xeirographa.com
Hello again, Turtle Island. Roughly halfway home, but flying over ancestors’ places. Feels nice (and weird to be able to internet from the air)
Oh, and a reminder: if you teach the Mansa Musa story about the price of gold in Cairo, be sure you pull out Warren Schultz's deconstruction of that story, just to get the facts straight: www.academia.edu/81562385/Man... #MedievalSky #GlobalMiddleAges #AfricanHistory 🗃️

Echo the Australian magpie annoying a tuxedo cat named Gilbert in Thames, New Zealand. The pair are known to be friends, though the magpie is often described as an annoying sibling that frequently pushes limits. They are part of a group called "Tuxedoes Unite" located in Karangahake, New Zealand.

Spent an extra hour (!) in airport security in Frankfurt because an individual in front of me thought that bringing a backpack AND a suitcase filled to overflowing with boxes of cell phones and foil wrapped Pokémon cards was going to be just fine 🫠 and then he’s arguing with the guys with guns. 🤡
Another form of grief: Many of us carry grief for the childhood we never had, or the care we never received. This painting is a gentle reminder that you made it through. Your younger self did their best. Now you can be the one who keeps them safe. Be kind to yourself. 💙
The use of AI described here, like for an initial sifting of mountains of data and using it to build databases, IMO, is totally appropriate. It was done by truly expert investigators who were not going to accept bogus hallucinations in results. I'm ignoring environmental impact for the moment.

One of the most popular songs on African social media over the World Cup is an AI generated remix of a popular French song “Pilé”. Unclear if the original musician is receiving royalties from the use of the AI remix. Same thing has happened with Stromae’s “Papa Ou Te” - the gospel remix is AI.
