Many people asked me early on: if ICE seems to just be rounding up random brown people on the street, why are they on a shopping spree for massive amounts of surveillance capabilities. The answer was always for this.

Som nevnt; jeg skal intervjues i morgen, om mine erfaringer med det å være eldre transkvinne i Norge. Selv lever jeg et ganske beskyttet liv, uten særlig kjeft fra noen. Så jeg tar med meg denne beretningen, fra mor til Rød Ungdoms leder. Om at alt ikke er vel i dette lille land. Fra Facebook.

Hetsen som har kommet i min innboks, er sendt av blonde damer som jobber i kommunen,og menn med norske navn. De hatefulle ytringene jeg har tipset hatkrim om, kommentarene til og med distanserte Facebook har funnet for grove til å la stå, kommer som oftest fra folk du handler med på Kiwi, og folk du møter på søndagstur. Folk som har googlet, funnet navnet til mor til Norges første transperson som leder et ungdomsparti, og skrevet offentlige kommentarer om hvordan jeg og alle transstøttende foreldre burde fratas retten til å ha barn, er faktisk av og til folk jeg har felles venner med, folk som har jobbet for det norske forsvaret, folk som flagger med norsk flagg, både i hagen og på sosiale medier. Jeg må si det. Presisere. At hatet mot skeive ikke er noe vi kan ta avstand fra, fordi det er unorsk. At hatet mot skeive ikke er noe vi kan legge på andre grupper som det er lettere å distansere oss fra. At han som kjørte bilen inn i den regnbuefargede folkemengden i Berlin, ikke er representant for hatet alene. Vi skal selvfølgelig ikke legge skjul på at religiøs ekstremisme er en trussel mot skeive. Men vi skal ikke legge skjul på at hat mot skeive, og særlig transpersoner, har blitt en nokså hverdagslig ting for etnisk norske mennesker også. Vi kan ikke legge alt ansvaret for farlige holdninger på andre. Nå er det bra å se litt på oss selv, si ifra når vi ser at noen blir utsatt for hat og hets, og gjøre vårt for at flere skal møte inkluderende, trygge pauserom, skolegårder, byturer, legebesøk, kirkerom, og kommentarfelt. Vi har tradisjon for å støtte kjærlighet, og for å tro på at den kan være større enn hatet. Kjærlighet har ingen hudfarge, religion, eller etnisitet. Vi må ikke glemme at hat ikke har det heller.

Today, in middle-aged academics' rage, I learned that a paperback version of the course textbook I've used for 20+ years costs $265!! The electronic version, which requires students to read it through the publisher's proprietary software interface, is $98. RIP books! 😩

'I see into the Now': The Prescient Ecologies of David Rudkin

This thesis explores the relationship between people and the natural world in the dramatic work of David Rudkin and in doing so reveals how these works map the shifts in this relationship in Britain over the past 60 years. Rudkin highlights nature's sentience, responding to human actions and becoming an active foundation upon which human identities are laid. In exploring how these texts are in dialogue with the societies from which they emerged, this thesis reveals the inherent prescience of Rudkin’s works, resonating with the anxieties of modern Britain and becoming tools for individual and communal self recognition and thus self-understanding. This thesis reframes Rudkin as a dramatist of great relevance for understanding how humans relate to nonhuman nature, particularly in the current moment of social and ecological crisis.The exploration of this relationship is divided into three chapters focusing on the different forms this relationship takes. These chapters are: ‘Nostalgia’, exploring the remnants of the British Empire that remain embedded in British culture through an analysis of Language, Accent and Xenophobia in these texts. ‘Rural/Urban Conflict’, explores how urban expansion, including traditionally urban structures such as capitalist ideology affect rural identities and communities. ‘Sentient Landscapes’, examining how the sentience of Rudkin’s nonhuman nature, acting both as avenger and teacher, maps the changing climate anxiety over time. The use of Rudkin’s 2020 PlacePrints series in this chapter enables a consideration of the ways Rudkin is also in dialogue with the contemporary moment of Climate Crisis. The methodology used is textual and live performance analysis, and the thesis is underpinned by an interview conducted with David Rudkin. This thesis uses the analytical frameworks of Ecocriticism and Cultural Materialism to place Rudkin’s physical worlds at the centre of study.

Jeg blir stadig fortalt at jeg skal være redd for folk med mørkere hud fordi jeg er skeiv, men all skeivfobi jeg har opplevd har kommet fra hvite folk, med ett unntak. Har selv bodd på Grønland, var aldri redd for å vise min skeivhet der. Langt mer redd når jeg drar hjem til bibelbeltet.
